Default Laleham

Dear Dame Starry,
Thank you so much for the photos of Laleham. They all brought back memories of a time long gone.

I did not know you could cook!

John Llewellyn.

I'm so pleased you enjoyed them, JL - I hoped that you would see them! It really is a beautiful place, especially in the summer and a lot of people have never even heard of it.
I love cooking!

All very true. Whenever I've been on a ferry coming back from foreign climes there is usually a cheer that goes up as the white cliffs are first sighted

But as for the England rugby team - they were facing the wrong way.
It was the Welsh what whupped 'em

The main beef eaters at the Tower of London are the Ravens.
They eat raw beef

These men are the Yeomen of the Guard (not Yeomen Warders) and they're carrying out the inspection that has been done at every state opening since 1605

Well done, Steve - at last, somebody who doesn't call all Yeoman 'Beefeaters'.

To give them their full name, they are The Queens Bodyguard of The Yeoman of the Guard and they date back to Henry VII.

The two pictures on the right are Yeoman warders at The Tower of London - and they CAN be called 'Beefeaters'.
The centre one is wearing the everyday black 'Undress' and (on the far right) they wear the red, Tudor-style uniform on ceremonial occasions.

The gentleman on the left is a Yeoman in The Queen's Bodyguard, defined by the cross belt worn over the chest and back of the uniform - and they have wonderful ranks such as: "Yeoman Bed-Goer" and "Yeoman Bed-Hanger"!
Now you all know the difference!

Oh and the 'gentleman on the left' by the way - is my old man!

Well done him. But now that they have ladies in their ranks are they called a Yeomaness or a Yeowoman. Or, even worse, a Yeoperson

See, she thinks that'd be silly

I don't think they have a woman in the Body Guard yet though - although I did hear some talk about it a year or two back.

I don't know whether they've settled on a proper title for her - although I have a sneaking suspicion that, as they are all ex-service personnel, the chaps have a few names of their own for her!

They have their own website - you could ask them!: The Queen's Body Guard

Congratulations to GB cycling team at the Track Cycling World Championships in Manchester.
Nine golds and one silver. It bodes well for the Olympics.
Congratulations also to Manchester who staged the event.

I'd agree with this lot of your choices.

My younger son caused wide amusement on the Isle of Wight ferry recently when coming into Southampton by calling out "Good Old Blighty" in a very loud voice....

I know just what he means, though!

To those that have posted lists on this thread, I find myself agreeing with nearly all of them
