Default Happy Birthday Dame Vera!

Hi everyone!......Dame Vera Lynn celebrates her 91st Birthday today.........she certainly lifted the morale of the Allied troops during World War II, going right up close to the danger zone to entertain them........

Ian Dury, drew Vera Lynn for one of her album covers. This was before he started Kiburn & The High Roads. I don'know the title, but I was shown it years ago the drawing took up most of the cover. Happy Birthday Vera.

And she gets a mention in the Blockheads track England's Glory

Nice bit of kipper and Jack the Ripper and Upton Park
Gracie, Cilla, Maxy Miller, Petula Clark
Winkles, Woodbines, Walnut Whips
Vera Lynn and Stafford Cripps
Lady Chatterley, Muffin the Mule
Winston Churchill, Robin Hood
Beatrix Potter, Baden-Powell
Beecham's powders, Yorkshire pud (Yorkshire pud)

Mind you, she's in some strange company there

Reassuring to see that all this business about the good dying young is utter tosh. I can continue being virtuous in the sure knowledge that it will be quite a while before I get my reward......

Here's one she did earlier:

If you're virtuous you don't live longer, it just seems longer

There is nothing like a Dame........like Vera Lynn.

A wonderful lady who I believe still works for charities.

A real English rose.

Dave.

Thanks Moor! Hearing her singing those songs again was quite a blast. Memory Lane winds on and on.

On a slightly trivial note, the great Dame is often referred to as the Forces' Sweetheart. In fact she is quoted thus:

It was a newspaper that ran the Forces Sweetheart competition when the first batch of boys, the British Expeditionary Force, went to France at the end of 1939. I suppose they thought they would give them something to think about and they ran this competition.
I was really surprised. I couldn't believe it. I know I had been broadcasting and I had good fan mail, but that they voted me above the American singers and anyone else in this country was quite a surprise to me. I just couldn't believe it. I felt very pleased.

However, I remember many years ago the broadcaster, David Jacobs, arguing the case for Anne Shelton. If there is a story behind it, no doubt it is lost in the mists of time!

Start every day with a smile and get it over with.
