It hasn't had any serious leftie content or campaigning since the days of the much-lamented Paul Foot.

Paul Foot carried on his good campaigning and investigative journalism in Private Eye. They now run an annual award in his name for investigative journalism.

There can be good journalists, it's just that I don't think that any of them that work on a national newspaper are allowed to carry out their profession.

The Guardian still does good stuff - lengthy mult-part examinations of schools, prisons, the public sector etc in Britain today. And they have some good environmental journalism. The Indie does good stuff too, judging by its front pages but I don't often read it so can't say for sure.

I suppose until politicians feel endangered, you can campaign all you like and it makes nary a ha'p'orth of difference. I always remember Maggie going 'green' after one particular set of local elections. I suppose I remember it because I voted green at the time, just because I thought someone should be paying attention to the issue.

I cannot imagine the slobs at the top giving two hoots about any vote these days because they know they're going to be in power for a long time yet.

They'll say they care of course, and announce a mind-numbing number of reviews and initiatives (all at tax-payers expense naturally) but they'll do absolutely nothing useful.

Sometimes that's a good thing. I've noticed carrier bags are still available at all the supermarkets I'm visiting, notwithstanding the recent green lather. Not that I'm complaining, because I thought it was all cobblers anyhow. But it is insidious that we are becoming a country that says one thing and does something else. I wonder if it's all part of becoming a good European.

It's a little defeatist to say that campaigning never works. If that were really the case, women wouldn't have the vote and trade unions would still be illegal. And none of us would have paid holidays or guarenteed sick pay. Still, good excuse for apathy though

Routledge isn't a bad writer but I don't think he's ever got any innocent men out of jail!

National Newspapers are like politicians, both think you need their guidance to think correctly. Both think they know exactly what you should and should not be told. I only buy them now for free DVDs and only on the basis of liking the DVD rather than the paper.

I buy the Watford Observer to read about Sarries & Watford FC and our local Welwyn-Hatfield Times which is good campaigning local paper.

Libel suits, Hitler Diaries, Zino letters, they've all cocked up in the past.

I trust what I read in the locals but always keep an open mind on the 'truths' the dailys give us.

Local newspapers don't have political affiliations,so that could be a hint.
