Default Farcical Sporting Moments.

Having seen the Olympic Flame being carried around London, surrounded by a phalanx of Policemen and security guards, I couldn't help thinking that as a sporting moment, it didn't really work.

Sport & Politics, free speech, human rights, whatever your personal point of view, it was I felt, cringe makingly embarrassing. What an image.

I seem to recall the Scottish football team had to turn up for an away game that was boycotted by the Oppo. Line up and kick off against no-one in an empty stadium.

Can anyone else think of other 'Sporting Classics'?

Jim Peters, the poor guy who was so disorientated during a marathon that he went the wrong way round the track and as a result lost the gold medal,

Years ago Australia vs Israel at football ( in Australia.)

Instead of the Israeli national anthem the German one was played instead.

How embarrassing!!

I liked when that barefoot girl tripped up America's darling heroine.

Terribly sad for them both. But I did laugh.

I thought having members of the sugarbabes and Denise van Outen carry the torch was the pinnacle myself.

Great idea for a thread, Harleybloke.
The match, versus an absent Estonia, was a qualifier for the 1998 World Cup, and the icing on the cake was when the ref blew the final whistle almost immediately after the starting whistle, and some of the Scottish players punched the air in triumph.
What a victory, although our Scots friends couldn't have been too sure of winning, having reputedly lost to the dustbins in an earlier training session!

Didn't those coppers look like twonks in their cycling helmets and goggles.
And why would celebrities be deemed fit to carry the Olympic torch.
I've got a horrible feeling that Baron Beckham of Leyton will soon be positioning himself as the lighter of the stadium flame in 2012.
After all, he is a local boy and the greatest living Englishman.

Default Foinavon

What about that great Grand National in 1967 with Foinavon. Check it out at YouTube - 1967 Grand National and the most amazing commentary by Michael O'Hare who doesn't take a breath for around 2 minutes!
If you prefer the Pathe News version in colour with Bob Danvers-Walker it''s at YouTube - Foinavon 's National in Colour 1967
Ifyou don;t know what I'm talking about settledown and watch it from the beginning and imagine how everyone felt watching this on TV that fateful Saturday afternoon.
