Interesting article in today's Guardian about the so-called sink estate on which the family live which might challenge a few pre-conceptions especially about their alleged welfare dependency.

very nice of them to put the feature on the internet so i didnt have to buy their newspaper ,trebles all round still on local govt jobs i notice ,lucky for some ,anyway back to dewsbury what a surprise the sun wanted to sensationalise the place !,the vast majority of people who live in such places will just want a quiet life ,who will be nice people ,whose only "crime "is to be unemployed ,retired ,or in low paid work ,there is always the shameless type family however and i speak with bitter experince after encountering such people myself , its not a problem exclusive to dewsbury neither ,wonder if the gaurdian reporter would want to spend a weekend there ?

Hey! Talk about lazy reporting!

I searched that article in vain for anything that justified your comment:

the jobs pages were jam packed with local govt jobs ! big salaries and job descriptions ive no idea what are for ,were we looking at the same paper ?my objection to some of the whacky "what on earth do they do there ? "style jobs is the money could be spent where its badly needed ,look at what happened when prison officers went on strike a few months ago ,look at their wages and conditions of employment ,a joke ,would you like to do a job like that ?divert the money to neglected govt depts ,spend it on the emergency services or even the police !,etc etc ,perhaps an army of cleaners to sweep the hospitals ? you get the picture

So if they'd happened to advertise an opera on the same page would you leap to the conclusion that everyone on that estate is an opera singer?

Look before you leap

I read the Guardian article fairly carefully and I have no idea what the connection is between local authorities pay their staff fair wages and the fact that some council tenants behave anti-socially. Would the world be a better place if local authority staff were all paid minimum wage?

When the street where the Matthews lived was on the news it looked like a bad episode of `shameless`. Every `mum` was overweight, with elasticated trousers and lank hair. Either that or `heroin thin`. The dogs roaming the estate loked in better condition than the tenants. Their children, feral brats, were swigging bottles of cheap contra french larger whilst discharging rounds of fireworks into the air-at 3am in the morning!! The British Council should produce a video of this to promote migration to Blighty. I think not.

Sorry. I had seriously expected one part of your post to be connected in some logical manner to the other parts of it.

I stand corrected.

the trebles all round remark on local govt jobs was a throwaway remark directed at the gaurdian ,[ local govt could be the town hall near you for example ,in the next sentance i said " anyway back to dewsbury " that was a clue ]look before you etc ,back on the subject im sure the sun sensationalised the place and the gaurdian went with a bleeding heart ,neither staff of either newspaper have to live on that estate so i doubt they would paticularly care , as long as their target readership got the story they wanted about the place ,my own point of view is the place doesnt look that bad ! there i have got a heart !
