I think the only thing I have read that has influenced me was Atticus Finch's defence speech in To Kill A Mockbird - simply one of the greatest passages in literature.

A free thinker can read a newspaper and should be able to work out for himself what is factual or otherwise, and not be influenced by the editorial stance or sensationalist aspect of the story and/or its headline!

It's like everything in life, you have to take in the information provided and discard the bullshit whether it's at work, watching a television documentary, listening to a car salesman or buying a private pension, and once you've worked out the other person's angle you are in a much better position to deal with the situation!
