Sounds like a few journalists been conned by their "inside inforners" who will tell them any old junk for £50. Or at the most a few truths highly polished with juicy nuggets of good sound bytes and quotes from non existent prisoners. And lets remember in many European countries a tv in the cell is a common privilege, to be allowed or taken away as per prisoners behavior. The main thing prison does is take away ones liberty No tv in the cell, or access to a gym is going to make a blind bit of difference, if you have the door banged on you and hear those keys turned every night.

And as for drugs. Prisoners are routinely drug tested these days. If they fail it, they are sent to a much tougher more spartan wing, with most privileges withdrawn. If they continuously fail they are sent to the block. The only ones who have it "easy" inside are the ones who tow the line. This is psychology 101, carrot & stick behavior. However strange as it may seem, i have spoken to many old time lags (ie: over 45) who do not like all this "Telly in the pad" nonsense, as it makes their time seem longer. they say you cant "get your head down and do your bird" as you are constantly reminded of "the out"
Strange but true.

Surely prisoners allegedly living a life of luxury is nothing new. Have none of these hacks seen Two Way Stretch?

That 'life of luxury' must be awful to endure .... perhaps that's why the suicide rate in prison is so high.

It was once thought of as a good thing:
screenonline: Convict 99 (1938)

I like that Ralph Smart put prisoners in deck chairs first.......

If the Dail Mail had said 'prisoners like being inside' would everyone then believe prisoners want to get out?

£10 a week and all the soap you can afford? Who wouldn't want to be in jail?

Me ... I visit jails quite often, and they are some of the most depressing, soul destroying shit holes I have ever encountered.

It just strikes me as ironic that the Daily Mail prints this sort of 'prisoners have it easy' shit on a regular basis and the anti-Daily Mail brigade don't go into a rage about it.

Yet, on another thread, an amusing story about Tommy Steele and Elvis gets the full anti-Mail treatment.

Some British newspapers are slightly better than the others, but they are all scandal sheets that will print any old nonsense just to try and sell a few more copies. That's the only thing any of them are really interested in

It's not just the Mail I object to, it's the vast, vast majority of the British media. I don't automatically believe the opposite of what they write. I don't let them sway my opinions one way or another. But I won't believe anything they write until I hear it confirmed from some sources that I trust - and that I know aren't just repeating and putting their spin on the original, badly reported or made up story.

I believe your story about life inside. I've visited some people in prison myself. So I just ignore these stories about prisoners living in luxury.

However, if anyone says "It was in the newspaper so it must be true" then I will point out the error of their ways

I don't really care if the Mail and the other newspapers fill every edition with lies. But I do care that people read and believe this nonsense.

Sorry, got delayed by a Chelsea penalty (Ballack scored).

I am total agreement with you on the first point and it is re-assuring to know that someone else in the world ignores those stories too.

I know someone who is a prison warder and he hates the lags with a passion. He always says they have better rights than the law abiding.

I seem to have read that we British did this once and created a whole country. I've often wondered why Australia isn't inherently bad, given that its Euro-genetic base was largely derived from the criminal classes.

Ah yes, but remember when criminals were shipped off to Australia thier crimes were often minor and a lot of people stole food and money to survive, it wasnt out of greed. Most were just normal people. I watched `The worse jobs in history`the other day and Tony R said that people who stamped the kings head on a coin the wrong way would have been be castrated!!!!!

Admitadly this was going way back but the punishment in the Victorian era were equally petty at times.

Of course there would have been real baddun`s sent over there but I dont imagine it was the majority.

What was the 'worst job' connected with that one?
