Dunno, sounded quite cushy to me, at least it wasn`t catching rats or making saddles out of dung

But he can go home at the end of a shift, and go to the pub or to the football whenever he wants. Would he really want to swap with them? I doubt it

Yeah but when he goes home at the end of the day and puts his heating on he knows he has to pay the heavy bill when it comes through the door, and is probably too tired from earning a descent living to go and play football

Which position would you rather be in? To feel tired and to have to pay the bills or to have no freedom?

At the end of a working day in the forensic secure unit where I earn my crust, and where the patients have en suites and TVs etc, I am totally knackered. However, I count each minute till I get out of that front door and can't wait to get home to my house, to watch my TV, to irritate you lot on my PC, to worry about how much of my money I have left to last the month and to talk to people I want to talk to. Being locked up against your will is not a pleasant experience, no matter how cushy others think it is.

Exactly, and it's the locking away and loss of freedom that's the punishment. We don't expect them to break rocks or sew mailbags any more

why shouldnt mundane work be part of the prison regime ? if society isnt seen to fairly punish the wrongdoer [ note the word fairly ] the danger is vigilantes will ,unfairly , like what happened to the lad pushed in the lake over a stolen bike !

Work in prison is regarded as a privilege - that can be taken away if they misbehave. It earns them money and it helps to pass the time. If it's not hard labour then it certainly isn't a punishment, however mundane it is

Exactly! They cant have everything, but at least being indoors they are warm AND apparently entertained with satalite tv and three square meals a day.

How many pensioners in thier own homes can say that? Maybe a lot, but there are a lot who can`t.

If you starve them and make them live in dungeons then they will *want* to escape.

Having escaped they might then come to your house and EAT you..........

There's a method in the apparent madness.

What a good idea .... let's keep them all outside, not feed them and provide no stimulation so they all go bonkers. What a wonderful way to treat a human being.

If you think being in prison is so cushy why don't you volunteer to spend some time inside .....

Because if I did decide to spend my time volunteering for anything I would rather volunteer for `help the aged` which I feel is a much more deserving cause.

The Three square meals a day comment was not a criticism of the prison service, of course people need to eat, but rather a dig at the government and pensions.

Also, if we kept them outside as you suggest we do we wouldn`t be having this discussion, a discussion I have no intention of carrying on to an unpleasant sarcastic arguement.

Therefore, where I am concerned, end of!

I didn't intend to cause offence, but these 'prisons are wonderful' stories really do my head in.

Sorry.

Nobody who's had any connection with prisons or the criminal justice system thinks that prisons are wonderful. Most people haven't had any connection with them - and that of course doesn't stop them expressing an opinion about it
