I started collecting old magazines two years ago on ebay and now have good collection, got some Film Reviews from the 50s, an old paper with Joan Crawford and Robert Taylor on the front, and others, does anyone else buy these, there not very expensive and well worth a read, and the ads in them are hysterical , three dresses for $5 face cream that has a 100% guarantee of taking away wrinkels, false bums, monkeys to keep in fish tank, sea monkeys think they were called . Ill have to look them out to give you a laugh.

I used to have quite a good collection of 1950s and early 60s film magazines, and a few of my mum's from the 1930s and 40s. But while I was in London in the 1960s, Mum sold our family home and moved to a small apartment - when I came home, my collection had vanished, probably got thrown out - along with my 8x10" glossy B&W gorgeous photo of Debbie Reynolds, personally autographed in green ink. (She was my "idol" back then.)
A few years ago I started buying them on ebay, but realised I was only looking at them once or twice then putting them aside, just hoarding them. So I thought, what's the point. You get to an age when you should be culling all your possessions, not adding to them, so I had to stop looking at them on ebay because of the temptation! ![]() Yes, the ads are great! I've also got a pile of old Australian Women's Weekly mags. and the ads are very entertaining. Some people actually remove full-page ads from old magazines and sell them on ebay - and make more money than they would get if they simply sold the magazine. I came home one day to find out my sister had thrown out all my ABC Film Reviews - several of which I had letters published in! Like above - I bought a couple on E-Bay but never really read them.
I still have some Photoplay from the 1970s - and I must own up to having a few copies of Cinema X which were actually quite good and featured articles by people like Peter Noble - yes and I recall some of them had pictures!!! |
