Because he went to a posh school and university while Ken went to the local comprehensive and then worked for a living? I'm not sure the ability to translate Euripides is a requirement for the job of Mayor of London.

Every cloud has a silver lining, and BoJo’s tenure as London mayor may well provide Gordon Brown with plenty of ammunition to direct at Cameron, after all the General Election isn’t going to be for another two years.

well if Dick Whittington did it theres hope for Boris

The first performance of Dick Whittington was at Covent Garden in 1814. Dick Whittington was based on a real character who lived in the 15th century and was Lord Mayor of London three times. In 1419 he was said to have married an employer's daughter, Alice Fitzwarren, and this is where the name of the female character comes from. The cat may have originated as a pun on the French word for purchase 'achat'. However other countries also have their own version of the story which derives from Persia (now Iran), and which tells the tale of an old woman's son who embarked for India with a cat.

There's intelligence and common sense, Boris always seems prone to putting his foot in it.

Labour seem to have not learnt from the Tories fall from grace and seem to blame all their woes on the global economy rather than leadership inertness and failing to listen to the electorate.

Well good luck to the Londoners, if , as people say he makes blunders , he'll probably scrap the fire brigade and enlist the help of PUGH, HUGH , BARNEY MCGREW , CUTHBERT DIBBLE AND GROUT instead.

Well the Mayor has specific duties and a general power to do anything that will promote economic and social development and environmental improvement in London. The mayor sets out plans and policies for London covering transport, buildings and land use, economic development and regeneration, culture and a range of environmental issues such as pollution and waste disposal. And very importantly the Mayor has responsibility for spending millions of pounds wisely as he sets the budgets for The Greater London Authority, The Metropolitan Police, Transport For London (buses, Taxi Licensing) London Fire Brigade and implementing and controlling the Congestion Charge. The congestion charge at the moment is £8 to bring your car within a perimeter covering a large part of central London, Ken was proposing increasing that to £25 per day for cars over a certain engine size and emissions output. I think its a job that requires incredible attention to detail and has huge responsibilty and power, thats why many people are a bit worried about Boris being in the job as he seems to be a bit of a colourfull character and has been described as a clown and buffoon and a tad eccentric....I hope for London's sake he is up to the job! Hope that goes some way to answering your question!

Can anyone remember how Ken came to be Deputy Leader (and then Leader) of the Greater London Council? It was certainly not by toadying.

I don't think anyone suggests that Ronald Reagan and Arnie are 'jokes' now!

Mayor Boris Johnson - BRILLIANT!!!

About time they got rid of newt-loving boring old Ken!

The only good things Ken did for London were more buses and free travel for schoolkids.

He has done NOTHING about shootings and knifings in London.

What's happening about the Lee Jasper fiasco? - fizzled out nicely! - free Caribbean holidays - paid for by Londoner's council tax.

I have met Boris a few times - thoroughly nice chap.

I have also met Ken a few times - comes across as arrogant and seedy.

More buses and free buses for schoolkids is quite a major achievememt considering that transport is his major responsibility. Though many would also consider the introduction of the Oyster card and the congestion charge fairly major (they've certainly both improved my life!). He has some say in the budget of the police but he can't actually order them to get more PC Dixons on the street. Do you really think that Boris has the power (or knowledge) to set up the sort of schemes that will actually tackle crime?

I guess we'll have to wait and see whether Boris' term of office will be as free of scandal as you clearly expect. His past record suggests not.

Do you know why they call him BoJo?
Well, you can't just use his initials.

How would that sound as a slogan? "BJ for the mayor of London!"

Dick Whittington was the Mayor of the City of London, the square mile, the financial district. There has been a Mayor of the City of London, and mayors of each borough, since time immemorial.

Ken, and now Boris, are the Mayor of London. The whole of Greater London. 600+ square miles and a population of 7 or 8 million residents that is swelled hugely by commuters and tourists.
