That's very true. London drivers are on the whole polite and civilised - although I did end up having to do a re-enactment of the Italian Job through Thames Ditton on one occasion when I fell foul of a plumbers van.

Just visiting for a day is enough to drive you round the bend - literally and metaphorically !
If you mean The Centre - the Tramways Centre as was, St Augustine's Reach, outside The Hippodrome, it's fine if you know what's going on....but outsiders get confused (It's like a squashed four-lane roundabout, but figure-of-8 and the inside lanes travel in the 'Wrong' direction...with taxi ranks on the inside, bus stops inside and out, and bus-only lanes at one end for good measure)...and on a Friday or Saturday night it's always fun avoiding pissed pedestrians trying to cross the four lanes of traffic...ask Kris Marshall.

I do wonder how much of the vote for Boris was from the ironic Boris supporters who do so with tongue firmly in cheek? It's not the first time, I recall a few years ago the monkey-hangers of Hartlepool voting a man in a monkey suit town mayor.

This was used by some of the media against Tony Bliar, when he ruled out a referendum on the EU. It was something like:"He (Bliar) asked the people of Hartlepool if they wanted a monkey as mayor, but he won't let the people of Britain to decide if they want the euro."

The Monkey Hanging Legend Of (Old) Hartlepool

Of course, whenever someone shouts "Who hung the monkey?",the normal reply is "Why is your father missing?"

I'd like to see Boris get on the case about some new statues, You can't expect people not to get a little bored with the same old thing. How about a nice bronze of Sid James in St. James' Park ? I'm sure ther would be other suggestions, no ?

Not if it's anything like the Chaplin bronze in Leicester Square, that's terrible

I like all the old statues, but we could always do with some more. We just don't have enough statues in London

The one of Oscar Wilde in Covent Garden is at least a bit more interesting

Actually, we could do with some decent indexes or guides to the statues of London.

How many statues are there of Queen Victoria in central London? I know of at least 3 but I suspect there are more.

But my favourite statue is a little one on Millbank of a male ballet dancer in full Jeté by Enzo Plazzotta. It's a gorgeous piece of work.

There was a character in John Winton's "We Joined the Navy" novels about a group of young men who joined the navy (like what I nearly did). This character would always arrange to meet his dates by a London statue, a different one each time. He reckoned that if she couldn't find out where the statue was then she wasn't very bright and wouldn't be very interesting company

Maybe a statue of The Who on Shepherds Bush Green (near to Goldhawk Road of course). Tommy Steele somewhere in Bermondsey and Norman Wisdom in Paddington Stn.(plenty of room for a life size there). I could go on...

Was Boris named after Karloff or does he take after Pratt?

The push me pull you variety should be allowed to ignore red lights too, just as cars turning left, who have no oncoming traffic should........... and overtaking on the left on a crowded motorway....... ooh, I'm off and running now......

For a country so proudly open to the arrival of new people, it's a shame we're so closed to the arrival of sensible ideas.

Bureauocracy lovers and Statists see all independent thought from the citizen as arrogance. They know the change change change we need and by the god of red tape, we're going to get it!
