JD Wetherspoons originally tried to bring the 'AFFORDABLE' pint back to Joe Public..
I think he has done an admirable job..in general.
There will ALWAYS be exceptions to this as in any other activities.
with the big chains monopoly of beer brands, you had to search high and low for
pubs not selling Bass or Ansells etc., and it was a refreshing change to actually have a CHOICE of Ales and Lagers.
Even imported bottled beers were priced out of my range!
I think individual managers make that difference..as one of our local branches sits next door almost,to a Sally Army Hostel, so at rousting out time..where else do these gents go to...?
They purchase their one pint which lasts them a couple of hours before reluctantly buying a second.......and this is the pattern of their day...sad for them...I admit..but sad for
the average punter also..(especially in warm weather!)A stronger manager is neededa s all the others in the chain locally are spot on!

Toodle Pip!

When I visit Bornemouth on holiday I often pop in to the one in Poole, whilst its generally a farly plesant watering hole I have noticed that the bar stuff are sullen and seems to be poorly managed.

On the plus side the choice of beers and lagers is farily good especally the guest ales a refereshing change from the boring old favourites in some pubs and chains restruarants which inevitably include boring old beers like John Smiths Tetley and Boddingtons.
There are a few in Croydon and there is one awful one within walking distance of an excellent one. Its the people that own them that are mainly responsible and the brand for not setting standards.

Remember when Irish pubs were all the rage in the uk in the mid nineties, anybody who has been to a pub in Ireland would be aware that these places were not very authenic, some of these Irish pubs are still with us like the O,Neals chain, ok I suppose but a lot of my mates have agreed that the drinks are expensive.

I alays expect very little from Wetherspoons and am pleasantly surprised when they turn out to be okay.

Saying that my local has 18 real ales on tap all the time and a G & T only costs £1.59. Why am I not there now?

the breakfasts are tremendous value, but the menu for the rest of the day has gone downhill. can anyone remember the 'wetherburger'? they were delicious, filling and great value. now its just plain old burger. however, the beer and a burger is perfect if your hammered! some of them are proper dumps though, the worst one i've been in is the one near the bus station in durham, it smells of urine and your feet stick to the carpet! the best is any in london because the price of food and beer in the capital is ridiculous! my personal favourite is the one down the road from tower bridge, theres this really chirpy irishman who works behind the bar and the last time i was in this random cockney bloke took out his harmoniker and played the theme tune to eastenders!

I would rather have an independent pub,run by a publican with ideas of his own - but alas, they are becoming less so in numbers!
