Default Wetherspoon Pubs

Do any pub fans out there share my opinion that the Wetherspoon chain of pubs are a bit of a curates egg. On the one hand they are always a welcome site when one finds one in strange town but they do have their disadvantages.

I have visited Wetherspoon pubs in Bournemouth, Torquay, Northampton, Scarboroough and Cardiff, but there is a downside to these pubs the food is not all that brilliant, they can be very grotty, the toilets are very drab and some of the clientle is decidedly dodgy.

When I visit Bornemouth on holiday I often pop in to the one in Poole, whilst its generally a farly plesant watering hole I have noticed that the bar stuff are sullen and seems to be poorly managed.

On the plus side the choice of beers and lagers is farily good especally the guest ales a refereshing change from the boring old favourites in some pubs and chains restruarants which inevitably include boring old beers like John Smiths Tetley and Boddingtons.

For the price I think the food is great!........I was in the Elephant & Castle area of London this morning, starting to feel peckish I was going to hunt for a McDonalds, but no, a Weatherspoon establishment called the Rockingham Arms caught my eye, serving a Farmhouse Breakfast; two eggs, two bacon, two sausage, two toast, beans, tomato, flatfield mushroom and a large Latte all for £5.02!!

Filled me up good and proper it did, though I noticed some of the locals who frequent this Pub were drinking Pints of Bitter at 9.45 in the Morning, just a little too early for me to be supping Pints!

My local pub is a Wetherspoon. Cheap drinks, reasonable food for the price and kids friendly. Perfect!

A couple of weeks ago I visited the Wetherspoon's in Boscombe and had a wonderful pint of Courage Director's Bitter for £1.69.
The premises were clean, including the toilets, and the staff were friendly.
Sadly, my family dragged me away, otherwise I would have been there all day.

There isn't any difference, Harley... you're quite right, they're just rubbish

But, there's plenty of proper beers in this country, including the three you mention.

Ever tried Badger First Gold? That's real beer

My nearest Wetherspoons is the Coronet in Hollooway Road which up till the 1980s was the ABC cinemas.Wetherspoons operate in a lot of old cinema buildings and are to be credited for keeping these buildings in repair and in use.
As for the food well i find it extremely reasonable and not too bad.If i just want a quick and cheap Roast Beef sunday lunch i will go to the Wetherspoon,if i wanted a slap up,quality sunday roast then i would be off to the Dorchester Grill.

If you think the lavatories in Wetherpoons pubs are drab, visit the Metropolitan Bar next to Baker Street station. Can't speak from personal experience for the Gents but the Ladies has clearly been designed by someone on very strong drugs and heavily under the influence of Lewis Carroll and MC Escher. Tastefully painted in purples and reds, they look strangely lopsided, even at the start of the evening!

The Wetherspoon pub in Norwich called The City Gate has the most amazing female loo I have ever seen. It is an old theatre/cinema and they have utilised a lot of the original decor in there and thrown in a brilliant aquarium for good measure.

A Wetherspoons opened opposite an office I used to work at in Bingley, near Bradford. It was a decent enough pub, but it seemed to me that it was trying to price the other pubs in the town, some of them old established, traditional pubs with proper beer, out of business.

What I don't like about some pubs is their insistance on having every beer freezing cold. I stay once a year at a hotel in Borehamwood where they do this, which is OK for lager, but a terrible fate for a nice pint of Old Speckled Hen.
