Default Hard times for British newspapers

What on earth are British newspapers going to moan about and scare people about now that it's been shown that property prices aren't as important to most people as the newspapers thought? Even worse, that the vast majority of people would be quite happy if they stayed level rather than continually rising and that a significant number of people would prefer it if prices actually went down!

That's sacrilege to papers like the Mail and the Express

Steve

The next big scare is already with us , food shortages.

I wonder about house prices and mortgages these days. When I took out my first mortgage in the 60's. As a tradesman my take home pay was just £16 per week, my mortgage intesrest rate was about 12% .

You may mock but I've only just managed to cope with the Great Fig Roll Crisis of April 2008

That's only, of course, if you believe the BBC ; they probably wrote that because the government told them to.

The press will always find something to trivialise and undermine. Thats as long they can supply free gifts to entice the few members of the public who still buy them.

Thats the joke that killed the Music Hall !

But that was back in the day when you were expected to save up some of the money yourself. Nowadays many people expect (& get) 100% mortgages. They're usually the ones that get into trouble if house prices fall a bit.

I know. The irony didn't click until immediately after I'd posted.

The property market is daft anyway. You buy a house or flat and live in it, it goes up in value by a large amount, you sell and buy another place for a large amount, so back to square one. You could sell and buy something cheaper, but that would probably mean smaller, or a different area, or something that needs a king's ransom spending on it!

If a house cost £50,000 and ten years later it was still worth £50,000, that's perfect. The only ones who would lose out are the banks and building societies because it's in their interests to keep prices as high as possible so that most of your income has to be used to pay the mortage and boost their profits!

The buy-to-let and amateur developer market is taking a pounding, but then so it should. The amount of greedy bastards who thought they could cash-in and it backfired on them must be in the hundreds of thousands. Unfortunately they forgot the golden rule "if they start making TV programmes about it, you're too bloody late!"

Why can't people just be grateful to have a roof over their heads?

And do you know who's complaining most about the slowdown in the rise (or even the occasional slight fall) in house prices? Apart from the journalists, most of the complaints seem to come from estate agents, surveyors, solicitors specialising in conveyancing and best of all, the presenters of those property shows on TV. I think we can all deeply sympathise with all of those people
