It's a wet and miserable day here in Norfolk ..... but I do have the satisfaction of not being at work. A nice walk to the local coffee shop for a mocha and a BLT await me a bit later, then it's time to pick up m'boy from school.

Correct me if I am wrong but is not your employer in breach of EU law? I thought that the maximum one could work at a stretch was 12 hours and then there had to be a minimum of 11 hours before the next shift. Sounds to me like he has you by the short and curlies and is taking you for a prat.

The NHS allows 14hr days and requires 9hrs between shifts. These are under review nationally but the Trust I work for has now reduced days to a maximum 10hrs but the 9hrs between is still in place. Many people (including me) prefer to work the longer days because we get more days off.

theyre taking thousands of us for pratts then ! under the tachograph rules you can spend 15 hours on duty then start again 9 hours later ,legally ,and the firms ,in this case a household name make you work to that when theyre busy ! its a joke driving a juggernaut under those conditions .i got out of it cos the council came round with chainsaws etc trimming the trees this morning and woke me up .i played the noise down the phone and said im not coming in after 2 hours sleep .... they couldnt argue !

Thanks for that info Bats. Seems like the government is applying it's double standards all round and then castigates bad employers. Without criticising personally don't you think it is dodgy for someone in the health service to only have 9 hours off between shifts. A person who goes to work tired is liable to make mistakes and if they do the employer screams "Not my faultr"

Bloody good for you David. The one thing that this countries employers are not anymore is FAIR. There was a phrase years ago "A third of your day and a third of your pay is making sure you pay your way"

I agree about the danger and I am very vocal with regard to that particular practice, especially considering where I work. When I was allowed to do 14hr hour days I worked Sun(14)/Tue(14)/Wed(9.5). I didn't start till 8am on Weds so that I made sure I had enough rest between shifts. Now I work Sun(10)/Mon(10)/Tue(10)/Wed(7.5) and I ensure that I get enough rest between shifts. I go nuts when I lose people on an early shift who leave off early to get some sleep before coming back for a night shift! It is dangerous because it leaves the rest of us short-handed but management approves of this practice.

A truly terrible day weather wise here .... very cold and very wet! Mrs Bat is about to take The Boy Wonder to a kids party, so it's time to sit in front of the fire and watch a good film.
