I am back at work today and the gentleman concerned has apologised, so all should be well. Thank you all for your kind words.

Bats, you can always jack it in a do sumat else.

I was a turner for 45 years and got somewhat brassed off towards the end. It weren't the job but the people I worked for and with. They say the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence but rarely it is.

Hang in there old bean, retiremant looms ever closer, then you'll realy enjoy life.

Thanks Frank. I would love to jack it in, but this is my second go at family life so it's all happening about 20 years later than for the average bloke. Only 16 years to go!

Another possibility is to do the same sort of thing somewhere less stressful. I'm a Senior Lbrary Assistant, and I've applied for a move from a branch library in a fairly deprived area (there are worse) to Leeds Central Library's local studies section.

The building is like Hogwarts when you get inside - wonderful Victorian design. I'd be helping people with research instead of dealing with noisy kids and druggie yobs, and I could get the bus to work instead of constantly feeding the car.

The best bit is that I could be doing movie and TV research every lunchtime!

I have applied for a couple of jobs that would be less stressful, but I didn't get either of them .... the funny things is that the job I have now is less stressful that the last one! I was the manager of a private secure clinic and was working a 14-16 hour day 5 or 6 days every week .... it nearly drove me insane!

I have just applied for a job as a Special Educational Needs Caseworker with the local council. I probably haven't got a cat in hell's chance of getting it, but if you don't try you'll never know.
