I was so hard up that my son had to get a part-time job to help out at 14/15 years old; because he wouldn't eat the food that I cooked and wanted to eat all sorts of junk food that I just couldn't afford to buy, I made him buy his own! Same with designer trainers etc. He left home years ago and is excellent with money now - but he still eats rubbish! ![]() DS x. |

We didn't have a 'phone when I were a lad. It was something the middle and upper classes only could afford, and I think it wasn't until the late 1970s that my folks ventured into the brave new world of personal instant communication technology. We were never allowed to use it of course, and had we dared it would have been a swift kick up the arse and a run round the kitchen table! Peer pressure at school was present even in the low tech 70s, and rich kids would often brag about their parents' new Trim 'Phones, and others would be ridiculed for still having heavy Bakelite 'Whitehall 1212' type models instead of the contemporary cream, red, green or glossy black plastic dial ones. Kids like us with no 'phone at all were always picked on, and whilst others gave each other their 'phone numbers for out of school contact and conversation we were treated like lepers. I'm here to complain about the price of beer.
When I first started my career in underage drinking in The White Hart in Northolt c.1962, a pint of mild was 11d (5p) and a pint of bitter was 1/2d, (6p). Tonight I visited my local and drank seven pints of Carling, plus a half for the landlord, and my tab, paid by plastic, was £22.50. £22.50! And I walked home compos mentis. £22.50! I could have bought a car for that money in the old days! And the guvnor had a pop at me for paying by debit card! I cannot come to terms with the modern world. Take me down. PS. MarkyB - How much for a pint of 4.1% lager in your club. Go on, depress me! |

I'm very lucky in that I have a son who uses msn all the time and boys, generally, are monosyllabic at this age, I've found. I have a daughter coming up to this age, though ![]() There is a new book out I heard about on the radio - it is about how to handle teenagers and has a spot on title: 'Get out of my life, but first can you give me and Alex a lift in to town?'
