A couple of months ago a colleague turned up in a car which I didn't recognise - hence my surprise when she emerged in the car park. By way of general chit-chat it became apparent that this was a car which she had bought for her daughter and was running to keep it turned over.

Said daughter is not yet 17. Now I know that kids expect cars when they pass A or O levels these days (depending on their parents' status) but this struck me as completely ridiculous. Obviously her folks are supremely confident that she will sail through her driving test...

It is a matter of personal pride that anything I have ever had after childhood (from my first cine outfit to show Super 8, through to cars and houses) I have always paid for myself, without help from anyone. Kids today seem to expect to be supported from the cradle to the grave. I can understand some level of support on these crazy house prices, but really they should learn to stand on their own two feet as well, where possible.

It seems to be a matter of social standing between competing parents who are scared of being seen to be 'lacking' if they don't keep both themselves and the next generation 'up with the Joneses'.

Crackers!

I'm not really looking forward to getting old with the next generation in charge of the country, Smudge.
In fact, that could be why the current government are insisting that we keep them in the manner to which they have become accustomed with their expenses - they're probably the ones from OUR generation that got it handed to them on a plate!

As a mother, I automatically feel guilty for a lot of what I did (or didn't do) - but I do believe that I raised a well-rounded young man who respects others and doesn't believe in violence.

I have decided that I will give my son whatever he needs until he gets his degree and then - it us up to him...

I haven't agreed to driving lessons yet. I have seen the way a lot of 17 year olds drive... I think you need a certain amount of emotional maturity too.

Mind you - you can go the other way. I think you need a good solid basis to fly off from...

Thanks for the info, Marky.
Duly depressed.
Even at £1.35 a pint, it's probably not worth the commute up to your neck of the woods.
I ought to post on the"where would you like to retire to" thread now.

Cycled to work this morning (about 4 miles) and it was tipping down - got soaked. At work it was sunny and bright. Cycled home and it tipped down again - got soaked again.

We were never allowed to use it of course, and had we dared it would have been a swift kick up the arse and a run round the kitchen table!

Peer pressure at school was present even in the low tech 70s, and rich kids would often brag about their parents' new Trim 'Phones, and others would be ridiculed for still having heavy Bakelite 'Whitehall 1212' type models instead of the contemporary cream, red, green or glossy black plastic dial ones. Kids like us with no 'phone at all were always picked on, and whilst others gave each other their 'phone numbers for out of school contact and conversation we were treated like lepers.
The only phone we had was in my dad's office so when he went out i used the phone to ring my friends he never could understand his phone bill's, i dont think he knows to this day it was me.

We had a visiting pool team from a pub over the road and they couldn't get over the prices in my place.

I feel good. Not only did I decline taking the car to Stockton,I declined to take the bus,so I walked. When I got to St Michael's Centre on Edgar Street,I gave my armful of blood. With no sensation of feeling draining away,I got up had my cup of tea and biscuits and walked back to Billingham. I feel so good,I feel that fate should treat me with a generous lottery win tonight.

If I am e-mailing from the Caribbean next week, you know Lady Luck has kissed me with good fortune.

Well done
Do a few more and you can get a gold badge like mine

I do always find that it seems to flow better if I walk to the hall where they do the doaning sessions.

Unfortunately, due to numerous tests and a couple of transfusions, they can't even get a full syringe of blood out of either of my arms now, so a pint's completely out of the question - but I did try to give it. I still got my tea and biccies though.

I'm sure most of us are aware of Google Earth (I think it's great, seeing things like Mount Everest!) but apparently nearly every Street in Britain is in the process of being photographed for a new service called 'Street view', just tap in a postcode and a pic of that street appears!, though it seems to be causing controversy in some quarters, here's a link to a News article.......(alright, I know it's the Daily Mail, but!)
