Guaranteed to make anyone with Irish blood (and others) cry into their Guinness.

Songs that refer to animals are always sad especially 'Old Shep'.

That one can be quite funny, especially if they start off too high, not realising how high those top notes are

True, like "Old Brown Dog" by Ralph McTell

Or just "For Those in Peril on the Sea"
Rarely tears but it brings a lump to the throat as I remember my time offshore sailing and other maritime activities

Steve
I was going to mention that one,Steve. It was used to great effect in Crimson Tide and The Perfect Storm. In Crimson Tide,it was used to underline the scene where Denzel Washington ordered the closing of a door, which would kill a few sailors, but in order to save the ship and the rest of the crew.

Speaking of 'Gordy', how about 'Canadian Railroad Trilogy' as another example of fine songwriting.

Walk Away was a song about a relationship between a man and a younger woman, but despite their strong feelings for each other,he decided the affair can't go on.
Walk Awaymm Lyrics by Matt Monro
We Got Tonight by Bob Seger is one of my all time favourites. Apparently it was inspired from a scene with Robert Redford in The Sting.
