Well maybe Im just one of the few Celts who is very fond of the term "British" I would echo Murrays assertion that I am a proud Scot and equally proud to be BRITISH, its what I call myself when Im abroad. I think a parliament exclusively for England is on the cards if David Cameron has his way. If the Tories win the next general election which seems likely judging by recent polls and results at Crewe, he has vowed to make changes to the constitution and limit the influence of Scots MPs at Westminster. Many who favor the union see that as a potential disaster and another step towards an independent England and Scotland. Recent polls carried out show that the people of England favor independence more than the people of Scotland which is surprising and you are the only Englishman I've ever heard who seems in favor of separation if its what people want. My view is that I am not convinced either way but like you I would certainly support any decision that was democratic.I think the idea of two separate parliaments while maintaining the union is a more likely scenario. |

You know it's quite amusing really that when Scotland play in a major tournament ie World Cup, European Championship etc or a Scottish Club plays in Europe, the English always seem to be fully behind them, supporting them all the way.
If England or an English Club are playing, the Scots are normally willing them to lose. I have never understood that mentality. Yet here we are having a discussion about a Scottish tennis player and the second anyone says anything remotely critical, it's as if the English are picking on him because he's Scottish. It's nothing of the sort. I would be delighted if he was winning grand slams but I am not at all sure he is good enough for that. Nothing to do with being Scottish, all to do with his ability. What a sad place it would be if we all thought the same. |

When I my original of question, the question of Murray's nationality never entered by head, other than the fact he is officially Britain's #1 player and therefore represents all of us Brits.

I was born in Scotland, i now stay in Scotland. I have in the past stayed in Israel and also in Manchester. I consider myself British/Scottish, and like to think of our individual countries as regions of a stiill very good if not always Great Britain. There does seem to be a very sinister strain of anti English feeeling in Scotland these days, to the extent that the English are fair game for any insult that any knuckle dragger cares to throw. This attitude is aided and abetted by the deeply Anglophobe West of Scotland press who glory in any defeat for the English national football side, and generally whip up the tensions prior to major tournaments. Indeed even in this strange Cricket hating country it is not uncommon to see men cheering on Pakistan and India such is the deep rooted hatred. Personally i think that the increase in this disease is due to the highlighting of West/Central Sotland's terrible sectarian problems in recent years. Political correctness and common sense has made it no longer socially acceptable for Protestants and Catholics to rip the shit out of each other, so they have simply diverted there attentions to across the border, and the saddest thing is that it has almost become acceptable to hate England. I for one shall continue to support the English Cricket team (its lonely being a Cricket follower up here) The England Football side when they play again in a major tournament, and make my four or five trips a year to watch Manchester United. Not all of us are blinded bigots. As for Murray, it would never even cross my mind that he was being slagged off for being a Scot. He's due a slagging because quite simply he deserves it. |
