Not UK but I'd strongly recommend the latest Fleet Foxes album.

I remember Paul Boateng quoting directly from the lyrics of the Pogues' Birmingham Six on Question Time in the late 80s much to the consternation of everyone around him as the song was banned as they were still in prison at the time.

Fantastic band, much under-rated.

'Fleet Foxes'.
I really love them! It is like we are getting our very own 'Crosby, Stills and Nash'.

The Pogues - yes, under rated - but partly the fault of their 'image' and image makers...drunken louts etc..they were genuine music lovers. I nearly saw them once - in Montreux of all places - but they cancelled.

Has anyone mentioned Billy Bragg?

Paul Brady...such talent. His version of "Paradise Is Here" , which he wrote, is so haunting.

I saw him at Wembley Stadium in 1992, I think; he and Bonnie Raitt were the main support acts at the Elton John/Eric Clapton concert

I love Christie Moore, born in Ireland.

John Martyn .... probably one of the most covered artists we have

"One appears to have dropped one's monocle in the soufflee"

Why not visit the Festive Fayre section?

Christie Moore fantastic, I have seen him live a few times very vibrant peformer, the first time I saw him live was in 1986 he was playing at a dance hall Dingle in Ireland. A somwhat bizarre evening he was flollowed by a disco.

Love Irish ceilidh music and from that, the Pogues.

Other than that I have been persuaded to listen to Devendra Banhart which sounds a bit twee to start off with but gets better and after a bit you can't stop playing it at all.

I like the Pogues, I wasnt a huge fan when they came on the scene first so I was only familiar with tracks like,"Irish Rover," with the Dubliners and Fairytale Of New York, but since then I came across a recording of,"Rainy Night In Soho by a another Irish artist then I got hold of ther original by the Pogues on a compilation, a song I cant stop playing.

Again, not from the UK (can we extend this thread?)

I was completely stunned when I first heard this.

I think we could extend this to mention American singer songwrtiers it would be a good opportunity to mention that Randy Newman has a new cd released. Only his third cd of non soundtrack matrial in twenty years. Heard about this from reading interview in the current edition of Record Collcector.
