Default D-Day

As it is the 6th June, I'd just like to say a big thank you to all the brave people who were part of the Normandy landings.

I wish I had claws.

I'd like to add my name to that. If it wasn't for them we wouldn't be here today. I thought of it soon as I woke up this morning. I haven't mentioned the Germans so I think I got away with it.

I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous.

There was one of those so-called "docu-dramas" on BBC2 a few months ago about the D-Day landings. It was presented by Richard Hammond. What annoyed me was that they only concentrated on the American landings, forgetting that there was also British and Canadian involvement in this historical event.

Because PTSD wasn't really known about at the time .... many survivors suffered horrifically from nightmares and flashbacks for the rest of their lives. It's a myth that these guys didn't suffer PTSD, they did, it's just that they didn't know it.

There was a great Poppy Day appeal a few years back where they showed an old man walking along a street and somewhere behind him a child ran a stick along a length of railings. That sound triggered the memory of the machine guns for the old man and he dived for cover.

Many of them wouldn't talk of their experiences to family members because only people who were there could understand. The British Legion and Regimental associations did a lot to help by getting them together where they could talk about it. But it was all done in a fairly amateurish way, often led by the men themselves just doing what they felt they needed to do.

God alone knows.

The nearest I got to the D-Day landings was watching " Saving Private Ryan" and believe me that was scary enough.

As a boy I knew a man who suffered with 'shell shock' , God knows what that poor man had been through, he never talked about it.

My Grandfather fought in WW1. His first time over the top was Loos 1915. Just before he died I asked him about it. Brings tears to my eyes to think of that conversation. Loos, The Somme, Ypres. He joined up with 6 mates. His 5 brothers ALL came home, none of his mates.

What odds would William Hill give you on that?
