A retirement home where I shall reminisce about the 80s, watch Auf Wiedersehen Pet with my fellow inmates and have tea dances to Dexy's Midnight Runners and New Order.

A house in the North Yorkshire Moors,a static caravan in the Yorkshire Dales and Whitby. A regular B&B in the Lake District and a holiday home in Cornwall.
That's if my numbers come out tomorrow.

I thought about writing this before. I might seem unexciting but when I retire I'll stay exactly where I am. It's already perfect for me

I get pangs of envy whenever I walk past the block of flats behind the National Film Theatre - the ones with the big fountain in front of them. I think I'll live in one of those, with a view over the river.

Goodness I haven't thought that far ahead yet. With retirement age increasing (soon it'll be 65 for both men and women, then it'll be 68), by the time I'm retired I'll be 70 plus.

I was brought up in an idyllic and very quiet village on the North Norfolk coast, which has hardly changed physically in decades apart from the fact that locals can no longer afford to live there. Unfortunately I wouldn't want to go back to retire there because after 30 years away it's just full of the ghosts of people I knew back then and grew up with, and many now rest in the little cemetary on the edge of the village.

I wanted to live by the sea because I get chlostrophobic when I am inland for more than a couple of days, and so having been made redundant and forced into self-employment I moved down to Bournemouth many years ago.

This gave me the benefit of living in a large seaside town, almost a city now, with all the things that you take for granted which we never had in Norfolk; hospitals close by, theatres, choice of cinemas, libraries, loads of shopping centres, swimming baths, gyms, leisure centres, loads of restaurants from all corners of the globe, international airport, big name live concerts, express trains to London, Seacats to France, a very good bus service, and has a very cosmopolitan feel to the place because of all the European visitors and foreign students. The beach is all golden sand and goes on for seven miles and the sea is usually like a millpond in the summer.

It's also easy to get to other attractive places like Lyme Regis, Sidmouth, Pompey, Dorchester, The Purbecks, The New Forest etc.

Whereas North Norfolk is so remote and the beach was all "stuns" and the North Sea was like Cape Horn at high tide. The shops are dear because there are no large supermarkets nearby, public transport is sparse, the hospital is in Norwich 26 miles away, the nearest airport of note is Stansted. If you are retiring you may not always be in a position to drive great distances, or even afford to keep a car, and so North Norfolk is not ideal if you're getting on a bit.

When I retire I will stay put in Bournemouth, but Common Sense will tell me to ditch the car. There are buses every ten minutes, or I can walk into town along the promenade or on a pushbike it takes a few minutes and there's no traffic to worry about of course. If I need to travel away somewhere I can always hire a car for a weekend which is preferable to the vast expense of ownership and depreciation these days.

I still enjoy going back to the village I was brought up in for a visit, but I'm always very relieved to arrive back home in Bournemouth.

My wife and I usually have about four holidays a year in Bournemouth, one of the things we really appreciate about the town is the excellent bus service. We dont have such a good service where we are, all the buses stop after six o clock in the evening and on a Sunday no service at all.

Retirement is a Godsend PROVIDED you have the means to live a basically comfortable life. Having been retired since I was 40 I moved out of that rathole called London to the Northeast of England. Never regretted it. Beautiful countryside and friendly folk and an hours ride from either the sea or to the moors. I am not rich but I get by on 800 a month which I know is more than many get. The reason for this is that I have had very bad health for most of my life and I am now on invalidity and railway pension. What I lost on the swings I have gained on the roundabouts for which the Good Lord be praised.

Where were you? The ones I'm thinking off have only been there about 10 years - directly opposite the back of the RFH. But I'm very jealous of anyone who lives within a stone's throw of the South Bank.

Actually, I think it was about 7 or 8 years ago we lived there, unfortunately only for about 18 months. And yes, the ones with the lovely fountain. Happy days!
