Fortunately our village is where the cliffs peter out and come down down to beach level, and its centre is a quarter of a mile from the beach anyway.

So not a penny have I earned since the end of April, and I won't be able to get back to work until August, and no state benefits to fall back on. Ho hum!

The plan was originally to become a millionaire by the age of 35, retire with a choice of homes around the world, drive across Europe in an Aston Martin and not return 'phone calls from various glamourous actresses and models craving my attentions!

So far I've failed to become a millionaire, have one home, just, I've never even sat in an Aston Martin let alone driven across Europe, and I don't get any 'phone calls from anyone except Indian Call Centres!

Having had a few days to mull this over I think I would like to live out my days in a very rural part of China or Japan. Whenever I see TV programmes of such places I am overcome with an intense feeling of tranquility and contentment and for some reason, wisdom.

The early morning mist. The Cranes fishing in the paddy fields. The Pagodas. Pandas.

One great thing about living in the UK is the lack of beasties and dangerous snakes crawling about. Apart from getting the cricket bat out in the garden to deal with a few maybugs, we're pretty lucky not to have to put up with life threatening creepy crawlies .

The human beastie population seems a bigger risk to us Brits nowadays.

I'd love to live in a cottage on the west coast of Ireland , wild yes but well away from Brown and his cronies.
