Default Where Would You Like To Live When You Retire

Its not going to happen but I have this fantasy that when I retire I would like to buy a house in Ireland. A bungalow overlooking the lakes of kilarney would be nice. Alternatively I would like to live in the seaside village of Waterville in County Kerry. A favourite retreat for Charlie Chaplin, there is a statue of him there in the town.

Other places I would like to retire to include Bouremouth, Max Bygraves old house in Sandbanks would do nicely. I saw it on a documetnary about Max a few years ago.

I wouldnt say no to a little house overlooking the sea at Livermead in Torquay neither.

Forum members its over to you where would you like live in your retirement.

Maybe some of you are living in an exotic location in your retirement, tell us about it please.

My plan is to sell my house when I'm fifty (bugger this lark of working till you're seventy) and go and live in either a canal boat or static caravan - where I would invest my remaining money in drink, drugs and rock'n'roll and with a big two fingers up to Gordon Brown or who ever else is in power.

"What fresh lunacy is this?"

Well, I've just retired and am exploring the possibilities. If only the weather in Scotland were better.

You're going to wait until you're 50?

I don't normally respond to off topic threads - but I couldn't resist this.

I retired in 2005. I am in my mid 50s. I did not want to work until I was not enjoying it anymore. I live on the South Coast near the sea with my wife (married in 1972) and I always thought this was a great place to live.

I am currently writing a book on 1960s films which will be published next year. I start work on it each day at around 10 and work in my home office (I converted my garage to an office in 1999) In the background I play music and I run DVDs of old films, partly as I need to research them and also because I never tire of them. I finish around 8 or 9 at night. I don't work on Wednesdays or weekends.

Every couple of weeks I have to visit places for my research and twice a year I go on vacation, usually to the USA where I come back armed with even more DVDs.

Until recently I also ran a website devoted to Oldies Music which some people on this board write to me very positively about. I just ran out of time to keep on running it.

I am not rich in the financial sense. Twice this year I have been offered full time work with excellent money - but it means hassle and hustle and dealing with people and getting up in the morning to be somewhere I don't want to be and listening to people I don't want to listen to

The question I am most often asked by very stupid and unimaginative people is "Don't you get bored with nothing to do all day?" This is the greatest time of my life. I enjoy every minute of every day.

I know a lot of you out there work because you have to and I am not trying to knock that - but this is just to let you know that at the end of it all there is the greatest satisfaction in putting it all behind you. Believe me when I tell you the best times in your life are still to come.

I always had this thing for Brighton, I think its the mix of living by the sea and unusual lifestyle. However when I get older it may seem a bit to lively for me. I want to be somewhere I can draw and paint, any ideas.

I would still live here on the edge of the Peak Distict. Would travel abroad several times a year though.
If I had to retire anywhere I'd probably plump for Tuscany.

I was only discussing this with friends recently.
No one can predict the future. You really have to answer your dreams NOW.
I know of a few people who planned great things for their retirement only to suffer ill health and sudden deaths at an age when they should have been enjoying themselves.

I am so glad that I did my world touring and house moves while I was still young.

Dave.

We may well have met Dave .I was on the road for about 4 years on and off from 1980. Never made it to Oz even though I'd got an Uncle in Adelaide.

My house .... but miraculously transported into the beautiful English countryside, preferably fairly isolated and near the coast.

I wish I had claws.
