Quite some years ago, the elite said something like 'it is the oldies who are the problem (the over 50s) it will be the younger people who will take over to unite the Continent'

Yet, I see more and more it is the young people of the Continent who are the most forceful and active in wanting Democracy. The Irish pictures showed young people jumping up and down. What a joy.

I'll endorse that.

If the politicians want it then it can't be good for us.

What was funny, when the BBC were doing some interviews with I presume randomly picked public on the streets of Irelands cities and towns, I seemed to get the impression that no one actually knew what thy were voting for or against - so when in doubt vote NO!

Thank you Ireland! However, the problem is that Gordon Brown won't hold a referendum because he knows it will get a "no" vote here as well. After all, after ten years of Bliar,we might get more years of President Bliar and - God forbid - the first lady of Europe,Cherie.

Because they know what the result will almost certainly be - and it's not the result they want

That twat Barroso will just go, on & on until he gets what he wants.

Don't they understand public opinion? Surely better now to conceed it's not what people want.

Persist and who knows what grass roots campaigns will start and....end up as 'Pull out of Europe' or who knows what else? Demos about petrol prices have shown people getting more mobilised.

The smarmy gits in suits still don't understand. People want to be heard. A week is a long time in politics we're often told.

It is, so for Govt ministers 4 years after we last had a say to say they know the best way to deal with a problem tends to get the bile rising in a lot of people.............

I said the same thing in the thread "Erin go Brea" But no matter. As long as I live to see the EU a dead duck I'll be happy. It has been a waste of time really as member states opt out of what they don't like such as britain and the working time directive. If one joins a club the rules apply to all the members indiscriminately which in the EU club does not seem to be the norm.

If one makes alliances then alliances are followed by obligations, obligations are followed by commitment and commitment is followed by consequences, so best not to make pacts with anyone. Go your own way.

The other two organisations I'd like to see go are NATO and the commonwealth. NATO being the Yanks shield for excuses and hiding behind and now unnecessary . The Americans have never won a single major war unaided. The Commonwelth is a farce as most of the nations who cried for independence have been anything but. Forever crying help and when they get it their leaders pocket it. The only real way to make politicians take notice is to take to the streets al la Poll tax protests.
