When just a wee slip of a girl I wrote to a pre-Oscar Kevin Spacey and got a lovely letter and a personally autographed picture (which I still have).

My mother had quite a collection - James Mason, Stewart Granger, etc. - but one only asks what became of them if one wants to hear a terrible tale of family betrayal.

If you count "Stars" as meaning puppets then yes I have written to Stars. Let me explain. When I was young lad I wrote off to the 'Thunderbirds Fan Club' enquiring about how to join etc. I did receive a reply. If memory serves it was a typed written letter, all very official and corporate looking.

I've been researching my family history and found my great-great-grandmother came from Saltcoats. (I'd never heard of it before.) I intend to go there next time I visit the UK.

"Margaret Malcolm Holmes was born on 4th October, 1815, in Ayrshire, the daughter of a sea captain, John Holmes, and Mary Cameron, who lived around Saltcoats, near Ardrossan in Ayrshire. John Holmes was subsequently lost at sea. Mary Holmes, it is recorded, was the head nurse of the family of a Colonel Fullarton. After the death of Captain Holmes, his widow and daughter stayed on at the Fullarton Estate, as it was the custom in those days for the head of the estate to take an interest in the welfare of the domestic staff."

I have looked up the Fullarton Estate on the web and it is now a park open to the public. My great-great-grandfather came from Girvan, so I want to visit there, too. They were married on the Fullarton Estate in 1838.

Julie Christie - when I was 16. The only actor I ever wrote to. I wrote a poem and commissioned a (more talented) friend to do a scraperboard portrait . Nice letter back (typed of course) from whoever.

Now the hormones are less raging but I still respect the lady immensely for her cussed individualism.

Not necessarily a great fan of his movies, but I have to say Michael Winner was extremely decent and helpful when I was writing about Orson Welles and Michael Powell, and very complimentary about my efforts, too - wish he didn't do those awful tv ads, though.

Me and Mrs wrote to lots of people over the years and had good replies from many : Laurence Olivier, James Cagney, Gregory Peck, Stewart Granger, John Mills, the lovely Margaret Lockwood, just as lovely Deborah Kerr, Vincent Price, Gene Kelly, Joan Fontaine, Olivia de Havilland, Dulcie Gray, Burt Lancaster (probably a rubber-stamp, this one), Bob Hope (the same), Lew Ayres, James Mason, Robert Beatty, Lauren Bacall, Jack Lemmon, the great Michael Powell, John Schlesinger, Bryan Forbes, Frank Capra - think I should stop there since it seems too good to be true and a bit of a pose really.

A possibly more interesting list could be those who didn't reply ? - Sean Connery, Michael Caine, Kathleen Byron, Marius Goring and practically everyone involved with Stanley Kubrick (while he was alive)....................

I once sent MW a script me and a mate had written to his Scimitar Films company. We got a really nice hand written reply from him which was more than we got from most producers and literary agents. We sent that script to loads of places and got personal replies from Simon MacCorkindale, Kenneth Branagh, David Puttnam and Alex Cox.

I still have a copy of it and I still think it's very funny. Ho hum.

Since this is the 'off topic' part of the site, this needn't involve movie people.

I once had a bet on the score of a Champions League cup tie, staking £5.

With about a minute to go a player was clean through on goal and about to score the goal that was to bring me an £80 win.....until the Dutch goalkeeper (I don't recall his name) rugby tackled the opponent as he went by.

One red card and a free kick later, the whistle went and I was denied that goal and the £80.

I wrote to the club expressing dismay.

The Dutch club sent me a 'happy new year' card and the keeper sent me a signed photo with a brief note of apology.
