In 1973 I first saw, on a small black and white television, the brilliant, spellbinding, chilling psychological thriller:
The Collector (1965). The Collector is one of those few, rare films, so breathtakingly powerful that it haunts the mind long after viewing. I was so utterly moved and mesmerized by Samantha Eggar’s beauty and sublime acting, I wrote her a fan letter praising her magnificent performance. At that time I knew very little about her and did not realise she had been Oscar nominated in 1966 for her role as kidnapped art student Miranda Grey – so I mentioned that this was an absolutely sensational performance … from whom I thought, was a little known actress.
I received a lovely hand written reply on a glossy 10x8 b/w photograph saying:
With best wishes from a “little known actress” … Samantha Eggar.
The individual phrase gently showed me that she was far from little known – and by using that unique phrase, told me she had generously taken the time, not only to write an individual reply, but moreover, judging by the writing, I was certain that the large envelope sent from California had also been personally handwritten and addressed by the lovely Samantha in her own fair hand.
The Collector is one of my all time favourite movies – and Samantha Eggar one of my favourite actresses and should have definitely won the Best Actress 1966 Academy Award. (Samantha lost to Julia Christie for Darling) My very deep regret is that the photograph of Samantha and envelope is now a lost treasure …
Miranda: “the whole of England must be searching for me …”
Franklin: “they’re looking for you alright … but … no one is looking for me …”
