Default Microsoft Windows

Every time we have a new version of windows comes along it seems to be loaded with tons of more crap we don't want. Why can't MS just give us a basic O/S that makes the computer work and let US choose which media player, office programme, etc, we want. Another thing that infuriates me is the need to re-boot every time you install something new. Lastly, the constant need to keep downloading patches and updates. If they ain't got it right after 18 years they never will.

Funny you mentioned that I did an update of Office, MS other of so great package, found out it didn't like my Adobe Acrobat and had to update that to. You think they would let you know about that before.

I've use Windows XP since 2006 and it's just mind boggling the number of security patches and updates there have been.

There is also the long running debate about the effectiveness, or otherwise, of the Windows firewall.

I think I have been using XP since 2002 or 2003, I remember when XP service pack 2 was sent as an update and as soon as I updated, my computer was hit with a virus. Apparently it created a back door through Outlook.

I never did a Windows update for a long time after that. But Norton 2008 configures so you are forced to do an update, since then my computer had a virus on it and I have done everything I could to get rid of it keeps coming back. Windows has us all by the throats and it sucks.

I have XP service pack 2, and Norton, pre-installed onto my laptop when I purchased it. Last year, after reading many negative reports about Norton, and the high cost of their renewal, I ditched it in favour of the vastly superior Steganos AVP.

Microsoft specialise in not getting it right
But they still sell enough so that they don't care

I can't understand why anybody would use WMP for anyything at all, except when they are forced to.
The bloody thing plays **** all, despite continually offering itself up.
I now use only PowerDVD (crasher supreme but nice controls), or my old fave, Media Player Classic.

(Waiting for bollocking from PC savvy wiseguy)

I just found a marvellous alternative to Mr Gates little mish-mosh. It's called "Ubuntu" [oo-boon-too] Ubuntu Home Page | Ubuntu It is a Linux O/S but works exactly like Windows. I have given it a try and am impressed by it. What is more it is completely FREE and has barrowloads of software inclusive that windows charges for.

Why not just use Linux? It's better than Windoze in so many ways.

When I run courses teaching people about Linux and other systems, the first thing I teach them is that Micro$oft didn't invent windows. Lots of other system used them before Micro$oft and lots of other systems still use them now.

Know what you mean there, I hate it when I switch the computer off at night before I go off to bed and I get the messages about updates from internet explorer and I have to sit there until they get installed, very tedious.

Do what I do - leave it switched on, then it automatically updates everything it has to while you're asleep and restarts the computer.
The only thing that you have to remember to do is to reconnect to the Internet.
