Default Posthumous Hits

I have been thinking from memory about the number of artrists who had records in the charts shortly after their deaths.

Elvis got to No 1 with Way Down shorty after his death, John Lennon did the same with Starting Over.

Bing Crosby was in the charts in 1977 with his duet of Little Drummer Boy, I think I am correct in saying that Crosby recorded that song with Bowie only days before his death.

Jim Reeves had a huge hit with Distant Drums in 1966 some two years after his death.

Buddy Holly had a number of posthmous hits one of them being "Brown Eyed Handsome Man.

Not being a big Eddie Cochran Iwasnt sure what hits came out afterhis death, upon checking Wiklopedia I see that Three Stars was a postumous hit and a load of other recordings were unearthed afterwards.

Can anyone think of any other hits from beyond the grave.

I only found out the other day that Janis Joplin recorded "Me and Bobby Mghee " only a few days before her sad death.

Otis Redding's "Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay", perhaps the all time great never meant to be posthumous hit.

Brown-eyed Handsome Man was one of posthumous releases that had newly recorded backing tracks added to them.
The group responsible for the new tracks was The Fireballs, the backing group to Jimmy Gilmer, famous for the big US hit Sugar Shack.

Roy Orbison's album "Mystery Girl" and the single, 'You Got It'.

According to Wikipedia, he only performed 'You Got It' once in public a few days before he died at an awards ceremony in Antwerp.

Eva Cassidy who gave Somewhere Over the Rainbow a whole new lease of life. In my book the only worthwhile thing Terry Wogan has ever done was promote this lady's recordings.
God can be hard to understand sometimes.

Nirvana released "You Know You're Right" after Kurt died. It was the last song they recorded together.

The great Jackie Wilson died in 1984 after being in a coma for 9 years.

In 1986 his song Reet Petite was #1 in the UK!

It's a toughy..............I mean.................don't think I'm being a cynic.....BUT........ record companies MIGHT re-release a record after someone pops their clogs, not for the money of course, cos it's for their fans............ and then where does that leave our memories......................?

.....You couldn't hear it, if they were shooting at me with howitzers!

True. Did I read somewhere that Elvis's estate was 'saved' by his death? Of course a lot of people who loved an artist's work during his career but didn't buy it rush to do so when they've gone, and that's understandable. I get uneasy when the record companies cobble a 'new' release together, such as Elvis's post death hit. That is morbid oppertunism.

HG
