I wholeheartedly agree with a weekly 'new thread' limit - I'm sure that if anybody desperately wanted an extra one and had a good idea, the Webmaster could use his discretion.
As for 'phasing out' older threads - you could lose some good accumulated knowledge and threads often get reopened by (sometimes new) members to rekindle a debate on a specific subject/person which may once again be relevent.

if theres some ancient thread about the popular classics such as get carter ,the wicker man ,quadrophenia etc and someone [ new to the site ] starts a new thread and the whole debate kicks off again on that film .why not phase out the old thread ? its a bit dispiriting to fairly new people to discover that everything that needs to be said about that film was done so in november 2003 .the odd time ive noticed that happening its killed the new debate stone dead when its been tacked on to the previous thread .like it or not the popular classics will keep resurfacing in posts by new members .

or you could just wait to the following week with your new thread ! as for phasing out threads ,you dont just watch your favourite film once so why only talk about it once ? if a new member starts a thread on a film and the original thread finished years ago then phase it out .it would be different if it was just weeks ago that the thread finished of course

You'll find that any 'purge' will have been on the more frivolous/tenuous threads - the film related threads are most welcome. This is mainly about content of the postings, not just server space.

As for talking about your fave films more than once - there are indeed the historical threads - but I have always found WATCHED LAST NIGHT useful for stimulating fresh debate, even though the films may have been seen many times...

Excellent response from Smudge.

Finding a balance between serious on-topic discussion and off-topic chat is always difficult in internet forums, in my experience. As Smudge says, it should be a matter of common-sense and self-policing, aided by clear forum guidelines which new members are either required to (or at least encouraged to) read when they join, and of which existing members can be reminded if need be.

As a very new member (who is delighted to have found this friendly and very knowledgeable forum), I must confess I was slightly alarmed by DB7's rather exasperated-sounding message (on the thread "Forum Restoration") and wondered if I was about to be banned without warning (probably for posting 'repetitious guff' ... it has been known ).

I must confess that like lupinpooter I, too, was concerned, but DB7 assured me that I had 'Special dispensation due to seniority'.
Ooops, sorry - that last word should be 'senility'...........

I disagree. I think it is far better to retain the historic threads and tag onto them - as has just happened in the Get Carter thread.

If someone has taken the time and effort to write a lengthy review of a favourite film, they might be somewhat peeved to find it had been purged because someone else began a new thread with a two line comment. I know I would!

There will never be a definitive posting about a film [apart from mine, of course ] so we can always add our 2p to the debate.

All the best

Well as a newbie here who joined three months ago, I have no real complaints.
I have no connection with the British film or TV industry, I am just somebody who finds film in general highly entertaining, and british stuff from the 50's and 60's historically interesting too.
I have found no reason for complaint about the forum. I am a moderator on a motorcycle club forum, and tend to find that the more pleasant sites to use are the ones that are 'self policing'. As a moderator the most I normally have to do is delete the porn links from Africa that appear over night!
I do not know how this site is configured, but on the one I mention above, any technical posts are saved forever to build up a useful database. Any chit chat type posts fall to the bottom of the page and delete themselves after six months.

Keep up the good work, I am learning lots of things. My wife came home and caught me watching 'The Saint' in the middle of the morning yesterday, she was not too impressed

Presumeably the top shelf magazines that might review the films suggested.
