Smile Robert Mugabe wins "landslide victory"

Robert Mugabe will shortly be named President of Zimbabwe, after his so-called "landslide victory".
One can only hope there is furtive mission to rid this world of this murdering despot.

I'm afraid ridding the world of Mugabe won't end what is going on in Zimbabwe - deposing the despot will only be symbolic just like the striiping of his knighthood.

There are many more people who at his behest murder and intimidate, and many more who are reliant on his incumbency.

When you've got militia running around a country capable of burning alive a young boy in front of his mother and then murdering the mother afterwords because the husband is a opposition councilor you need to overhaul the country from top to bottom - that is going to take a lot of effort. There are many sick and vile people who under Mugabe if he losses power will not be able to float off to another country like Air Marshal Perence Shiri who is responsible for the atrocities in Matabeleland which included bayoneting pregnant women because they had the foetus of a opposition supporter.

Plus a lot of the country do support Mugabe, his policy of grabbing land from white settlers was popular policy, the biggest considered worries in the eyes of his followers about his nation are not his atrocities but famine and economic failure and most disappointingly there seems to be no cross-tribal political movement available to take over from Mugabe.

Mugabe is small potatoes!

If I may, can I recommend an excellent Blog-site written by the wonderfully brave Cathy Buckle.

If you have any spare time, read some of her archived letters from 2005 onwards (she writes weekly) documenting the downward spiral of life in Zimbabwe from the perspective of a white ex-farmer.

A travesty but it was predicted from the outset that Mugabe wouldn't give up power. Had the opposition stood in the run-off it may have signaled a civil war as the military are in cahoots with Mugabe.

He's lucky the country isn't oil-rich or he'd be invaded by a coalition of the willing...

One wonders what would happen if Zimbabwe was an oil rich country? Who then, would intervene - any guesses?

As it is, its simply a tribal african state with a veneer of civilisation.

I'm very simple (as you all know) and I'm the first to admit that I know bugger-all about politics, but how does somebody standing UNCONTESTED in an election win with only 85% of the votes?

DS x.

... good point! There are a lot of very strange and sinister things happening in Zimbabwe so anything is possible.

Don't miss out on a chance to win a rare film in Bat-Quiz 13 closing date - 31/8/8.

Because the other 15% were brave enough to put in a spoilt paper or vote for the opposition leader who had withdrawn from this travesty of an election.

The result was:

Robert Mugabe: 2,150,269 votes
Morgan Tsvangirai: 233,000 votes
Spoilt papers: 131,481

Thanks for that 'Modular'. I shall read with interest, although the spiral of destruction and despair is all too familiar in all the countries of post-colonial Africa.

A glimmer, and it is just a glimmer, of understanding of black African society is available in the pages of "Our Grandmother's Drums" by Mark Hudson. It's the best explanation I have read of why those societies behave the way they do once the colonisers leave.

Regards,
HG

What a negative bunch!

Look the lad done good - fought hard against the odds and won through...

Typical Little Englander attitude to carp at another guy's success!

We've always got to tear them down.

Just 'cos he's gay...

All men leak.

Gay? That would blot his copybook, wouldn't it? Maybe some of his opponents read this forum and can use your revelation to start a rumour.
Ironically, wasn't it Peter Tatchell who was the last Brit to almost lay hands on the murdering scumbag when he tried to carry out a citizen's arrest on him in London around five years ago? Shame he didn't have some official help at the time.

HG

The South African President should hang his head in shame...........but I doubt he will.

Why the dragging of so many feet? perhaps because various leaders fear, that one day, they may have to run an election like that themselves...........

.....You couldn't hear it, if they were shooting at me with howitzers!
