Cow farts are a very serious problem - basically, due to most of the planet's human occupants being carnivores there is an unnaturally large cattle population which is contributing seriously to greenhouse gasses (I think it's greenhouse gasses - I'm no scientific expert) due to all the methane they expel.

The short answer is - save the planet and go veggie togay!

No, no, no .... to save the planet, eat more cows!

Seriously though ...

Cattle are responsible for about 3.5% of US greenhouse gas emissions, on a CO2 equivalent basis. To keep this in perspective:
  • 2% of greenhouse gas production is in the form of methane from garbage decomposing in landfills.
  • Roughly 2% is chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) from air conditioners, refrigerators and industrial processes.
  • Other industrial processes (especially cement manufacture) produce about 2%.
  • Burning jet fuel accounts for more than 3%.
  • 12% of greenhouse gas emissions are CO2 emitted generating electricity which is used in residential applications like lighting, TVs, computers, and refrigerators.
  • 17% came from burning gasoline in cars and trucks.
So cow farts and burps do contribute some to greenhouse gases, and thus to global climate change. But they are not a major cause. Reduced consumption of beef and dairy products would probably have little effect.

Of course, when taking all this information on board, we should all remember that climate change is also a natural phenomenon.

Don't miss out on a chance to win a rare film in Bat-Quiz 13 closing date - 31/8/8.

its methane gas thats produced when an animal [ including humans ] breaks wind .it just shows how silly some of this "global warming " business has become .man cant live on this planet without polluting it to some degree .i heard a scientist on the radio the other day saying cooler summers are because of global warming ,they would argue black is white if they had to

Well I said I was no scientist, but I'd still recommend a vegetarian diet to anyone - nothing had to die and the grub's great (at least when I'm cooking).

I think that we will do far more harm than good if we start interfering with the natural evolution of the World.

And don't be fooled, the government are not introducing 'GREEN' taxes - they are 'BROWN' taxes, the same as they have been since 1997.

Not according to 'Science in Action' ...

17% came from burning gasoline in cars and trucks
3.5% came from cattle emissions

... the old cliche about statistics is proved yet again!

Ha ha - normally when it's colder weather/rain storms etc, it's climate change. When it's too hot, it's global warming.

What did they blame it on in the hot summer of '76? Seem to remember it was sand from the Sahara or something.

I have to have meat at least once a day.

I went veggie for 12 months once - and it left me with IBS which is exacerbated (in my case) by too much fruit, veg and fibre.

I enjoy meat .... but we never argue about it. The Boy Wonder gets fed meat on a regular basis. He can then make up his own mind later. At the moment his favourite meal is spaghetti and meat balls!
