If anyone is wondering, it's because here in Canada mail is only delivered Mon-Fri.

And at some bizarre times too. Our record is nearly 10.00 pm although that was leading up to Xmas. It wasn't popped in, having been wrongly delivered elsewhere. I saw her through the window.

Away from Xmas, between 5 and 7.00 pm is by no means rare. And we're in the City, not some place out in the sticks.

Those kind of mailboxes are used in some parts of Shropshire and Wales, too. It saves a very long trek for the postie, not having to drive all the way up to the farm to deliver the mail over axle breaking lanes.

thats a good idea in those circumstances but when you watch american films or tv ,theyre just at the end of a path on a typical front garden .the paperboy usually just flings the paper at the house as well !

David B, the "Breadbin" mailbox as you call it is mostly a rural and suburban phenomenon, I've only seeen one in New York City and I put it there. Mailboxes in apartment buildings (flats) are built into the wall and are not very large. If you get something bigger than a book, or too much junk mail you have to go the post office the next day to pick it up. If you live in a doorman building (with concierge) he will take the excess mail from the postman, alas I have no doorman. My mail usually arrives between noon and one Monday to Saturday.

I did read an article a while ago which suggested that if the Royal Mail was privatised people living in rural areas would have to go to their nearest RM office to collect their post.

Most houses here have a mailbox fixed to the wall by the front door. Go out of town and there are boxes at the driveway entrance.

The papers are delivered to the mailboxes too. But if there's been evening or overnight snow and they can't get from the street to the door, the paper will be put in a protective bag and thrown to your door.

That's fair. One can't expect them to climb over the 6 foot high snow bank left by the plow.

Incidentally, it's cheaper to have papers delivered here than to go out and buy them. Can you believe that?

I could go out in minus 40 in the winter, traipse through snow and ice to the local shop to buy it at a cost of $30 a month....or have it delivered for $16 a month.

It would be a cheap way to light the fire on those long cold winters days.

people dont realise that the royal mail is a service ,theres no money in delivering a letter fom lands end to john o groats for 35p . rural deliverys are equally low on profit .when its privatised that kind of thing will be over

I am very lucky over here, our post offices and mail are excellent. When I do want to send something across they can tell by the destination whether it will get their next day or not.
