Default Characters immortalized in song

There have been many characters mentioned in song, some were real people others were heroes from mythology such as Robin Hood and some characters were dreamed up by songwriters. Many of these songs come from the folk tradition and others from popular songwriters of the twentieth century.

I have come up with a quite a few and I am sure forum members can think up more. If the songs are contemporary I have indicated the composer.

Casey Jones

Frankie and Johnny
Tom Dooley
Barbara Allen

Mr Bojangles (Jerry Jeff Walker

Ballad Of Ira Hayes(Peter La Farge)

Sister Josephine(Jake Thackray)

Benefit Of Mr Kite(Lennon and Mcartney)

Eleanor Rigby (Lennon and Mcartney)

Bad Leroy Brown(Jim Croce)

Jesse James (Woody Guthrie)

Billy The Kid (Billy Joel)

Miss Otis Regrets

Mack The Knife(Kurt Weil)

Marilyn Monroe (Ewan Mcoll)

The Rev Mister Black

The Ballad Of Davey Crockett

Ballad Of Hollis Brown

Maggie May(The Liverpudlian ballad as opposed to the Rod Stewart hit)

Lonseome Death Of Hattie Caroll

Al Bolweys In Heavean(Richard Thompson)

Robin Hood

A very eclectic mix of characters, train drivers, steel workers, cheating lovers, heroes and vilains from the Wild West, actresses, criminals disguised as nuns and a lonely spinister etc.

Dallow, Spicer, Pinkie, Cubitt (Brighton Rock) and actor Patric Doonan are namechecked in Morrissey's Now My Heart is Full.
Also 'Spring-Heeled Jim' by the same artist.

I should have mentioned Bob Dylan's Went To See the Gypsy. A couple of songs by Don Mclean come to mind,"The Legend Of Andrew Mccrew." about a man who was ran over by a train, his body was mumfied and used in a circus. Many years later they decided to bury his reamins, Don Mclean saw a repot in the paper I believe.

Another Mclean song was about George Reeves who played Superman on tv and recently Don penned a song about Princess Diana entitled "Run Diana Run", a welcolm return to form after a number of lacklustre songs in recent years.

Singer Songwriter Harvey Andress wrote a very good Buddy Holly tribute,"Please Dont Get On the Plane.2
