My son is 5yrs old. He is in reception and is being taught to read phonetically (and is doing well). This is part of the National Curriculum and is certainly not a reversion to 'old methods'. I don't personally like this method but it is working for him.

Not really, after the first time it loses all effect as a deterrent. Like the asbo it becomes something of a schoolyard badge of honour.

Really? I was caned at school and I know how I felt. Not proud, not hard, but very sore! And it was very obvious walking around the school which masters were in the quiet classrooms - those that used the cane, or the blackboard rubber, or the 'twitch'. This was the music teacher's method of control, grasping your sideburns and twisting them until you squeaked.
Of course these days most of the offenders are bigger than the teachers, so it probably wouldn't work. But it is strange that, apart from Sloths perhaps, we seem to be the only species on earth that doesn't physically chastise its offspring. Was there any truth in the saying, "spare the rod and spoil the child"?

HG

I'm sure Max Mosley would think so. You do know that the phrase has nothing to do with the disclipline of children?

Quote:
If matrimony and hanging go
By dest'ny, why not whipping too?
What med'cine else can cure the fits
Of lovers when they lose their wits?
Love is a boy by poets stil'd
Then spare the rod and spoil the child
You can find the rest of the poem here.

No, Captain, I didn't, but I do now. Thanks. This will keep me occupied for some time I feel.

Maybe if the newspapers and TV stations sopped reporting it, it might go down as it is not reported into a "fashion icon".

its a sad state of affairs if carrying a knife and using it against someone has become "fashionable " you cant blame the media for reporting someone being killed in such circumstances

And does it spell the end of civilization as we know it when two policeman are beaten-up by a gang of young people, because one of their number (a girl no less) was asked to pick up her litter?

HG

No, of course not. It's not a good thing, but civilisation has survived a lot worse than that
