What disturbs me more though is this habit of attaching 'tsar' to anyone who heads up a task force. When will the media realise it creates its own clichés?

The BBC will undoubtedly call Alf H the 'so-called knife tsar'.

LOL!.......That's given me a laugh also Marky!, I hope Alf dosen't go into a 'Frenzy' with the Job he has in hand, after all he may be called as 'Witness for the Prosecution'!

The Delivery company I work for were in a bit of 'Argy-bargy' with the Police a short while back as an under 16 year old signed for a Parcel of Knives that were delivered by us from a well known Department store, but as the Driver said "how on earth are we to know what's inside Sealed Parcels"?, which is right.

Now all Deliveries of this nature have to have a "not under 18" sticker on them

Most of his proposals are simply headline-grabbing nonsense without rational thinking.

National Service; a policy of the BNP and John McCain, the latter putting the cost of implementing it in billions. So with ill-equipped front-line troops we divert funding into a scheme intended to teach tearaways discipline and respect - many of whom will simply scarper. These kids should be taught respect at school, at an age when it might sink in.

As for taking them to see doctors or hospital wards and showing them the effects of knife crime - haven't NHS staff got better things to be doing with their time?

The ironic thing is before all this carrying knives kicked off about a year ago I was so scared after hearing about women being attacked, raped and murdered I was tempted to stick a knife in my bag for my own protection. Of course in my mind it would only be used if any of the above was literally happening to me and only then as a last resort. I just wonder how many other ordinary people have thought of doing that?

I will not be carrying a knife but through fear it crossed my mind.

But In my opinion I think usually where gangs carry knives it can almost be seen as a fashion accesorie to them.

With so many new initiatives being really just a reversion to older methods, especially in education, could there now be a place in our society for the return of corporal punishment?

I don't think so. These days most of the teenage offenders I deal with have a strong resentment against any kind of boundary being placed on them. To start beating them as well as will probably make them worse by creating a 'tit for tat' attitude, with the justification/motivation mainly being 'I told you I was tougher than you'/'You hit me, I'll hit you back - harder'.

Re education, what 'older methods' are you referring to? I have not come across radical reversions in teaching methods.

we dont need "tsars" or any new laws .there been a criminal offence called "carrying an offensive weapon " around for yonks .all that needs to happen is for it to be enforced .when they have their "tsars "and new laws its just to make it look like theyre doing something .
