Default Favourite jazz musicians

I strted getting into jazz when I was about 18. I went down the safe route first of all by buying an album by The Dave Brubeck Quartet a compilation which had Take Five on it a track I have always loved.

By the time I was 25, I got into jazz in a big way.

Here are some of my favourites.

Oscar Peterson
Modern Jazz Quartet
Charlie Mingus,"his "Better Get It In Your Soul,"is one the most exciting pieces of jazz I have ever heard)
Art Blakey

Stan Getz
Count Basie
Thelonius Monk
Buddy Rich
Duke Ellington
Dizzy Gilespie
Miles Davies
Gerry Mulligan(a great favourite especially his recording of Bernies Tune)
George Shearing
Milt Jackson
Lambert Hendricks and Ross
Blossom Dearie
George Melly
Keith Jarrett(his compostion My Song is another favourite.
Dexter Gordon
Acker Bilk
Kenny Ball
Chirs Barber
Coleman Hawkins

I assume John Coltrane was meant to be in your list ? If you like Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, are you familiar with Eddie Jefferson, the guy who King Pleasure ripped off ? I'd never heard of him until I moved to NYC, well worth checking out !

Yes, Billy John Coltrane was meant to be in my list I should have included him, his recording of Afro Blue on a live album recorded live in Birdland had a huge impact on me when I bought it in 1987. This has prompted me to mention some anecodtes told by guitarist Terry Callier on a recent live album, some nice stories about Coltrane and Elvin Jones.

Dont think I have heard of Eddie Jefferson, I will seek him out, thanks!

The Sage of Tippo, Mose Allison is still terrific live and has made plenty of great records especially his work on Prestige and Atlantic. One of my all time favourites.

Default British Tradional Jazz

Modern is OK but stick to the original: New Orleans close up in a club.

I mainly like Big Band jazz, one of my favourites being the Ted Heath Orchestra - or what's left of them. Forget Courtney Pine et al - Tommy Whittle and Roy Willox do it for me every time. They don't make British jazz boys like they used to.

I'm also a fan of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, and saxophonist Ted Nash in particular. He's a bit 'out there' in terms of some of his composition, but his sound is something else.

Roy was the lead alto on my first ever session (CTS studios, october 17 1980) and it was an inspiration to record with him on numerous occasions. I often was on sessions that included Roy, Kenny Baker, Don Lusher, Lenny Bush and Ronnie Verrell....a great privilege for a young lad and with so many (although I hasten to say not Roy) no longer with us, a proud connection to a historical era.

I like 'Soho' type Jazz, as heard through the Window in Peeping Tom when Mark enters the Photographic studio above the Newsagent and Millie says "look who's here, Cecil Beaton", other than that I like 'Bluesy' type Jazz such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, etc;

Mark

In addition to the predominantly US and dead musicians already mentioned, (though of course I wouldn't want to undervalue their achievements), there are plenty of superb British musicians playing in a club or concert hall near you right now. I'd mention, just for starters: Andy Sheppard, John Surman (who have already been listed, quite rightly, as they're both superb), Django Bates, Stan Tracey, Ian Ballamy, Peter King, Kenny Wheeler (Canadian, but lives here, a grade A genius), John Parricelli, Don Weller, John Taylor, Julian Arguelles, Mike Westbrook, Harry Beckett, Michael Garrick, Mark Lockheart, Hugh Warren. I think we are in a golden age of British jazz.

I think you are right about the current british jazz scene I recently purchased an cd of the BBC British jazz awards and there is some good stuff on there.
