Thanks for the info. I did some investigating after seeing this post - it looks more interesting than football - to watch and to play - at least to me.

PS ...but we don't talk much about the 2006/7 series!

All references are specifically to England. Is Scotland involved? Wales?

Cricket is occasionally played in Scotland and Wales - but only by ex-pat Englishmen

Come on you Rammmssssssss!
I think your club actually did West Brom. a favour by winning the play-off's last season. You gave us another year to get a good squad together for this years Championship title chase.
Before a kick had been made this season I predicted that Derby were dead certs for relegation. Your squad was far too weak. I also think you'll find the going tough in the Championship next season.
Lets hope the Baggies fill Derby's place in the Premiership next season.

Still, England's women have just completed their third grand slam on the trot!!

.....You couldn't hear it, if they were shooting at me with howitzers!

Not true either ....one of the great England bats of the seventies was Scottish....Ireland, and Scotland have their own teams; both were at the last World Cup in their own right, but neither have Test (International elite)status. The Test nations are England, Australia, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, South Africa, The West Indies and Zimbabwe, the latter effectively suspended as no-one will go there at the moment and they can't afford to tour.
There have been talks about a Wales team - Glamorgan, a Welsh county, play in the English county leagues - but thus far Welshmen have always been eligible to play for England, as have Irish and Scotsmen. So currently English is a de facto British team, with a separate Irish and Scottish team as well. Confused? You would not be alone.

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

The other Ashes (England v Australia) series we like to remember is from 1981....IIRC we had lost the first two of the five-match series, the captain, one Ian Botham, had been replaced as captain but kept his place in the team as an all-rounder (a player who can both bowl and bat well). In the third test, Australia posted a huge first innings total, which England failed to get within 200 of, so had to bat again before Austalia took their second and final innings....the first wickets of the second England innings went pretty cheaply, leaving just Botham and the specialist bowlers (Not known for their batting) to score what they could to salvage some pride.
Watch this first; YouTube - Ian Botham 149* (3rd Test, Eng v Aus) Headingley 1981 Ashes Ignoring the incorrect captioning up front;

and then this.... YouTube - Bob Willis 8-43 (3rd Test, Eng v Aus) Headingley, Ashes 1981 ....still reckoned the best match in living memory.

That was a great end to an exciting match. Even I remember that one. It seemed like the whole country stopped to watch it.

And just to remind people who have never played the game, even as a child, that ball is coming in fast!

The batsman has to not just see where it's going and simply hit it, but allow for any spin that will make the ball curve in the air or bounce strangely off the ground and will probably make it come off the bat at a strange angle as well.

Then they have to not only hit the ball but to hit it so accurately that they can direct it to the empty spaces between all those fielders.

Not at all easy

Steve

The ball's hard too...varnished....and not round (if the seam on a new ball hits the ground it can go anywhere) and of course after a few days the pitch develops cracks and patches of wear....modern fast bowlers have been recorded as bowling up to 96 mph....but I wouldn't be surprised if Tyson and in particular Harold Larwood, in the thirties, exceeded 100mph. The most sublime fast action I've seen (On film)...all rhythm and power, not a particularly tall man.
Did you see Larwood bowl Steve???

Seeing as he retired and moved to Australia the year before I was born - and I've never been to Australia, I doubt it very much

Indeed....and the irony of that dastardly English Bodyline scandal of the thirties, was that Douglas Jardine was Scottish, too....

I believe he wasn't a liked man though.
Even players in his own England team didn't like his tactics.
He alone, nearly caused Australia to leave the Commonwealth.
