I saw the Portsmouth game last week, and Chelsea were dinstinctly average, very ordinary in fact, and it looked like they continued in the same veign yesterday. Did the Villa keeper have a real save to make in the second half? Cannot remember one myself.
I sensed in the Summer that Roman was throwing down the gauntlet to Jose, " so if you are that good, stop spending a fortune and win anyway". When you watch them, you do wonder where the money's gone? Not very wisely spent, would be putting it nicely They have gone backwards this season. |

Agreed. I actually thought they went backwards last season with Abramovich virtually forcing Jose to play Ballack and Shevchenko when it was obvious neither of them was up to the job. It is difficult to defend the amount of money Abramovich has spent, but other teams have followed suit and I think the money is no longer a factor between the 'big' teams as they have all spent heavily. Jose and Abramovich clearly have different ideas about the way the team should play, Jose likes a team to defend well and grind out results, much like George Graham's Arsenal and the Greek team that won the Euros. Abramovich appears to want a more 'exciting' team and Jose is trying to combine his ideas with the needs of the owner. IMHO this is a recipe for disaster. The manager should be in total control of the team. Chelski will probably do well again this season simply because they have a brilliant manager and some very good players, but the opportunity to create the foundations for long term success has been diluted by internal squabbling.
I did like Jose's comment that he was expecting a call from Keith Hackett after SWP was manhandled to the ground by a Villa defender yesterday. It just proves that 'bad' decisions go against everyone from time to time, not just the Jolly Scousers, as Ricky Benitez would have us believe. Bats. |

What would really drive me nuts is spending big money on Boulharouz, Johnson, Kezman, Ferrereia etc and then having to offload them for next to nothing. And everytime he looks at a player (Alves?) the price is doubled. That said he's made a rod for his own back, the signing of Sheva was self-indulgent and an area of team affairws he shouldn't be meddling. The mad thing is that whoever is manager next summer, he'll probably be demanding £60m in transfer funds too. Jol for Chelsea!

That is very much a problem of our own market with an inflated domestic market? Would you buy a fringe international like Darren Bent for £16m when you could buy a better player abroad for the same money? Even old Div1 players like the uncapped Curtis Davies have £10m price tags on their heads. Now such players tend to get bought by mid-table sides and with a lack of competive European football their progress tends to stall. Lampard and Cole were going nowhere until joining Chelsea whilst Defoe has moved clubs but his career is still unrealised. |

Ah but that is counter argued by the fact that many of the foriegn players demand knock ons.
Some Chelsea players were staying in first class hotels at clubs expense and the club paying their tax on that perk. One in particular had free flights home and back and free flights for his family to visit etc. It all adds up to just as expensive a package. Many of these foriegners that are cheaper aren't as good, it's just this modern day king's new clothes that if he sounds Italian/Argentinian/Brazillian/etc he MUST be of quality, which as we all know, is nonsense. There is no doubt that the amount of foriegners in the game has harmed it. I knew this would be the case from the outset, mainly because celebrity Fulham fan (oops sorry forgot he changed his allegances to successful Chelsea)David Mellor said foriegners would be good for the English game and make England a better side better equipped to play against other world class teams. And we all know whatever Mellor says, think the opposite and you are right |
