Who can also forget Rodney Marsh and Les Ferdinand, both excellent players for QPR in the past.

Stan finished his time at Griffin Park and still turned a game with one flick of the ball. That was the problem with England, We marvelled at the Brazillian flair but when we had someone with a bit of individual class about them, ie Bowles, Marsh, Curry, Worthington etc we didn't use them enough, we just said they were too flamboyant off the pitch. So long as they did the business on the pitch who cares?

You'll still find Stan drinking in the pubs round Brentford. Last I heard of him he was a salesman in the Tile Shop on Brentford High Street. Certainly an underused talent.

The sad thing is about most of the stars of yesteryear is that they end up in really mundane jobs.Given that in their day you could not earn a fortune from playing the best they could ever seem to aspire to was running a pub or owning a sports shop.Nowdays of course most of the premiereship players dont have any financial worries about their future.

Absolutely. That is why the testimonial is now an outdated fixture for the highly paid top flight players. In days gone by they were there to tide retiring players over.
I remember a Bobby Tambling Sports shop in Havant and a Steve Perryman one in Greenford.

Matthew LeTissier comes to mind.

As does Gazza. England never really got the very best out of him.

Le Tiss, what a player. Trouble with England is that they try to fit these players into the team and snuff their natural ability rather than build round them to use them to their full.
It got on my nerves the way the press used to hammer Gazza for his off pitch antics when he never once let England down on it, and surely that is where it matters, ON the pitch.

Wonderful stuff that the "Rose of England" team beat the French in their own backyard.
Could it be at all possible that England could now go on and retain the Rugby World Cup? Fingers crossed.
Just two weeks ago you could have had over 100/1 on England retaining the trophy.

As far as the other England football team went, I thought overall it was a very poor performance. After the highs of beating Israel and Russia it was back to the mundane stuff being trawled out against Estonia.
Although I admire Rooney I must say that he has had very few good performances in an England shirt. His goal against Estonia was his first for England in 3 and a half years.
His pairing with Owen again did not work.

I'm beginning to think that England's recent run of victories has been down to more good luck than McLaren's team planning. The best team performances have been when some of his "stars" have been out injured.
I just hope McLaren can somehow get it right against the Russians on Wednesday.

Well done England's rugby team ..... they have played out of their skins to prove the doubters (inc me) wrong ... I watched the semi at the insistence of Mrs Bat and will watch the final too!

Bats.

ps - McLaren boys were poor but won anyway and McLeish's lot did really well (a goal for Sheva too!)

To David Brent

Rooney's goal was his first for three and a half years, in a competitive match for England, he has scored a few in friendlies.

Conrats to both the footy and rugby guys. An excellent performance from Wilko and company, you are going to die to hold on to that cup. McClaren, it's going to be very tough for you "Back In The USSR" next week, choose wisely grasshopper.

Rooney, can't help but think of Rodders in Only Fools with that identity bracelet, (or did Jon Sullivan have a premanition), is a great player but does not get the same back up as he does at United. He's big and bulky and gets totally marked out of a lot of Englands game, yet Owen who is small and most defenders think they can squat him out of the way has serious pace, like Defoe. Can't wait for Aaron Lennon to come back, that guys like a Ferrari, so fast and so skillful. He will scare the hell out of any defence.

I remember seeing Rodney and Stan down at Loftus Road all those years ago. Who can ever forget the R's stuffing WBA 3-2 at the league cup final in 67? Ok QPR came back from the dead, but it was a great success for a 3rd division team.

Stan though was a great passer, he passed many a whisky to Besty, God Bless Him, God's footballer.

nice one Bats ,still not a convert but at least you are supporting the lads ,nice to know you are watching.I think the football was mediocre ,Rooney needs a rest he is still a young lad with too much going on in his life.
What price an England Argentina final ?

Missed the rugby , sunday is curry night at the old jewel in the crown , having not seen the game I wonder how much the 36 - 0 debacle has fuelled the confidence of the springboks and the resolve of england. My money is on england ,I know they have the ability and just hope that another power performance from the forwards will release the backs and maybe we will have a more expansive game, but having said that, If we win by grinding out another result who cares . COME ON ENGLAND
