Bradford. Seats. People died. Horrifically.

Which is why the fences came down at most English grounds immediately afterwards.

There's a general movement towards a small allocation of standing areas in stadia and the sooner the better as far as I'm concerned. The atmosphere will improve and admission will be cheaper therefore a lot of people won't be priced out of going and attendances will rise!

The stand at Bradford I think was made mostly of wood,I don't think i would like to see a return to standing areas as it would be quite easy to hide an idiot to throw something on the pitch surrounded be his mates. Making it harder for CCtv to pick them out.

I am willing to bet anyone on this site 5-1 that we will not see standing on terraces allowed in the Premiereship for the next 10years.I have stood on only a few times in very big crowds and i have never been so scared iun my life.Safety has to be the criteria.Terraces with large crowds will always have the potentiality for disaster.
On the subject of racism William Gallas said in the programme v Bolton that he had never experienced it in this country. We should take pride in this bearing in mind the awful abuse that used to be heaped down on black players at some grounds,Everton being one of the worst examples.

A night of mixed fortunes in Europe .... a good solid win for Chelski with a great goal from Droggy .... another poor performance and another defeat for Liverpool despite a good goal from Gerrard. Avram came out with all the appropriate cliches after the Chelski match (happy birthday Roman) but it was head in the stand time for Benitez and Gerrard, ''we dominated the match'' and ''we should have won'' were two of the most startling comments. A few weeks ago Chelski were in tatters and now look to be in reasonably good nick .... now it's Liverpool's turn to look a bit crap. This is turning into the best season for ages.

Bats.

Has really fallen apart since he lost his assistant. Maybe he underestimated having a sounding board to bounce ideas off and a more affable conduit to the players.

Yes there were many factors to the Bradford fire BUT there were also many factors to the Hilsboro tragedy than just terracing.
To argue that the terracing should never be returned on the basis of it makes it harder for cctv to pick out idiots chucking things is a pretty poor arguement and sticks with the myth football is full of knuckle draggers.
Orpheum is right, there will not be a return to safe standing in the top filght in this country. Clubs have invested too much in their stadiums and all the time they are filling all seaters at the prices they charge and gete away with, they will never want to return to it.

In Europe, I have to say I have never seen a team performance as good as Arsenals on Tuesday night. I hope they turn it on like that against Moan Ure and Liverpool. Absolute joy to watch.

I didn't know he had lost his assistant ... what happened?

The Arse were pretty impressive on Tuesday without a doubt .... somebody had better beat them soon (not Man USA though) 'cos another unbeaten season would be too much to bear.

Re the Merseyside derby referee .... I was glad to see that hypocrisy is alive and well in the form of our Spanish friend Ricky Benitez. After moaning like hell (and getting an unwarranted apology from) the Chelski incident ref, his comment re Clattenburg ''Referees are human, mistakes are made, it's all part of football''. What an absolute t****r!

Apparently he'd become a bit too cosy with Mourinho and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. I think he's on 'gardening leave' to prevent him joining another club.

I wonder if you saw a Liverpool appeal for a penalty for handball after about 75 minutes.Does Gerrard hope that there are Clattenberg clones all over Europe? If Stevie boy that is palying well i would hate to watch you when you were playing badly.
Finally a quote from the Slavia Prague coach "I admit i was looking at the time and wished the match ended as soon as possible"Shame that Rosickys shot the bar then we would not have to share the record against Juve.On further thought if Platini gets his way and Cup Winners get in to the tournement then this score is going to be the rule not the exception.

Young Theo did well. Anyone reckon he should be playing for the national squad?

At Man. City the club actually acknowledges an area of the ground behind one goal as a 'singing area' (they refer to it in the clubmag. etc.). This area spreads halfway across the stand and then there is a security gap with stewards separating it from the other half which is the area designated for away fans. Most City songs (Blue Moon, etc.) start here and are taken up by the fans around the stadium. Away fans then try their best to outsing the home fans. Needless to say these very vociferous and committed fans never sit down. They have in effect created their own standing area. There is a campaign which emerges now and then to remove the seats from this area. It may happen yet!
