It actually looks from the photo as if Gazza is rather enjoying it from that shy grin on his face.Could you imagine for example Savage doing that on Ronaldo?

Savage would probably complain that he'd hurt his hand!

Two real handbag swingers there Bats, Some of Ferdinands defending is embarrassing ,If anybody takes a shot at goal he turns his back, his face ,and everything else away from the ball In the old days a cry of S***HOUSE (sorry for the language ) would have echoed from the terraces

Hoo haw!

A good 2-0 win for Chelski over Ricky's Jolly Scousers tonight. Another goal for Sheva too! I have read that Chelski are looking to buy Anelka from Bolton in the transfer window. He's good, and a lot more mobile than either Sheva or Pizarro. If Avram can get him to link up successfully with Droggy that will be a strike force worth watching.

Re the tackling debate earlier, I haven't seen it (I am a non-Sky radio listener) but Crouch got his marching orders for yet another 'two footer'

Didn't watch it either but the forum comments suggested the ref was a homer and Lumplard scored another goal by aiming at the corner flag and getting a deflection.

You never get any homer refs at Anfield of course.

I was having a discussion with some mates about football "past and present" and we all agreed that in the fifties and sixties seeing a player being sent off was an absolute rarity. It was also something of a disgrace to the player involved.

In today's games we seem to average a sending off per game.
I'm not saying that the game has got any dirtier - it's just that the laws of the game today tend to rule out hard tackles and shoulder charges. Plus goalkeepers today are protected species.

I watched that recent programme where they compared football 50 years apart using a comparison between the 1957 Cup Final and the 2007 Cup Final as an example. It was fascinating. There were interviews with players involved in the '57 final and comparisons of diet, training methods, tactics and money. I would recommend all Premiership footballers to watch that programme to see how lucky they are.

What I want to know (and I'm sure there will be someone who knows) is when did the (in my view) ridiculous system of shirt numbers start?

What is/was wrong with good old-fashioned one to eleven. It wouldn't be another example of player ego, would it?

it was around 1993.Each player now has a squad number. If you want to see 1=11 you will have to watch non league football.

Wasn't it a knock on effect from the world cup system of allocating a squad number to a player for the duration of the tournament ?
I wonder who It was that realised there was money to be made by charging individually for the numbers and letters ? When my son was younger his favourite player was Andrei Kanchelskis I persuaded him to have Giggs on his shirt instead
