Remember that up till the 1990s Football Combination matches and some Youth games would be played at many First Division clubs.I used to go Highbury for reserve team games till well into the 90s.So by March many grounds were bare of grass or as at Derbys Baseball Ground mudheaps more usually associated with Sunday League pitches on the local park.

Is the Footbal Combination still going .... or have they separated reserves teams into different divisions and regions as was proposed a few years ago?

Just found it on Wikepedia. It is for clubs in the Championship,Leagues 1 & 2 and Blue Square Leagues.it is divided into East,Central,West and Wales.Only premiereship clubs can play in the FA Premiere Reserve League.I dont think that any Premiere League Club plays these games at their home ground any more.Arsenal play theirs in Barnet.Back in the long ago days of the 60s,before Sky Sports, vidiprinters, internet etc getting information on how your team was getting on away from home was very limited. So the letter A on the half time scoreboard was used to communicate the current score to the crowd(well a few hundred of us).So one eye was kept on the paly and the other on letter A.A big cheer if 0-1 came up on the scoreboard.

Cheers orpheum. Norwich still play reserves games at Carrow Road. I go every so often and the matches are usually quite entertaining. They only open one stand so the atmosphere around the spectators is always noisy. In the 70s Greg Downs (later of Coventry City's cup winning side) used to lodge with my mum and we always got free tickets to reserve games at Carrow Road. Hot pies and tea in paper cups .... fantastic! And not a prawn sandwich in sight.

According to Wikepedia Norwich play in the Eastern Section of the Combination.I used to really enjoy Combination games at Highbury. Not the least because my brother and i were allowed to sit in the directors box.Quite apart from the fact that this meant free tea and sarnies at half time one could also mix with club officials of both sides and often first team players. So it was always worth a visit.

To Marky B

That must be right that Mc Claren was the last Englishman to win a trophy! Well the League Cup is not really a major trophy these days, but it does get you into Europe. That's why he got the England job. The Fools!

It's a great pity youngsters don't seem to be encouraged to go and watch non league football. Certainly not as expensive as Premier fb and great fun. You also get to watch football close up and learn about the game.
With it also being regional there can be a good chance you could go and see away games.

My non league team is Wingate & Finchley FC. 7 pounds to get in plus 1 pound for programme. They play in the Rymans laeague Div 1(North)and are currently 14th.My dad helped found the team in the 1940s so i have a special affinity to the club.So if you are ever in North London and you are not going to the Emirates then you could always give it a go.

I often go and watch Wroxham FC. Wroxham is a village about ten miles from Norwich in the heart of the Broads. It's always good fun and the matches are entertaining with very little handbag throwing etc.

I went to watch Wingate on Boxing Day.They were playing Redbridge.Went 1-0 up and then conceeded 3 goals in the last 20minutes of the first half.I had my half time cuppa and left as it was a cold day. They only lost 3-4 in the end.

KEEGAN RETURNS AS NEWCASTLE BOSS

Keegan - Geordie legend.

Kevin Keegan will sensationally return to Newcastle as the club's manager.
The 56-year-old was a hugely popular figure during his first spell as Magpies boss from 1992-1997 but was ranked as an outside candidate to replace Sam Allardyce, who left St James' Park last week after an unsuccessful short stint in charge.
Gerard Houllier and Didier Deschamps were strongly linked with the position in the last two days but the club unexpectedly announced Keegan as the club's new manager on their website on Wednesday afternoon.
Keegan was linked to the role but initially only in partnership with legendary striker Alan Shearer.
Keegan took Newcastle to promotion back to the top flight in 1993 and came close to winning the league title in the 1995-96 season when they famously led Manchester United by 12 points before finishing as runners up.
He went on to manage Fulham, England and Manchester City but has been out of the game since leaving City in 2005 after a largely unsuccessful spell.
