Mention of Mouldy Old Dough being played at a speedway puts me in mind of going to watch a football match at Ewen Fields, home off Hyde United then of the Northern Premier League.

Never having attended their ground before, and pushed for time because of using public transport, as I approached the ground I wasn't sure if the match had kicked off, and all of a sudden I heard a mighty roar:
"Whoooooooooooooooo" Thinking that the match had started and the crown were doing the chant as the opposing goalkeeper takes a kick (wooooooooooo, your shit ahhhh!!!)

I laughed as the beginning of Tiger Feet by Mud blasted over the tannoy.

I later found out that Hyde were "The Tigers" and Tiger Feet was the song they came on to the pitch by.

Mouldy Old Dough, my first girlfriend, no disrespect. No 1 in the charts at the time.

I loved going to Speedway at Wembley and the noise would deafen you. A great night out and afterwards, a donner and chips before heading onto to the E3 bus to get you home only to be told, "you can't eat that on 'ere." A long walk home but oh the memories.

There hasn't been any speedway at Wembley for many a long year. Nor at West Ham, Wimbledon, White City or any of the other London tracks.

Speedway as a spectator sport is nowhere near as popular now as it was in its heyday in the 1940s-60s, but it's still quite popular. And the crowds are still as mixed and friendly as ever. You could easily see a big hairy biker going up to some little old lady and politely asking her what the times of the last race were

It's always been one of the few sports that I have any time for so I was pleased when we recently acquired Swindon Speedway as a client. They were 2nd in the Elite League this year and of course I had to go and visit them a few times - always on match nights

For those that don't know, this is motorcycle speedway where you take a 500cc bike, strip it of all non-essentials like gears or brakes, power it with methanol and hurtle it around an oval cinder track of about 400 metres in length at speeds of 50-70mph. Unlike with most other motor-sports you get to see all of the action all of the time.

Still very popular all over Europe, Scandinavia, Australasia and some parts of America

Ah Swindon Robins - Barry Briggs vs Ivan Mauger. Epic battles. I saw some Channel 4's world cup coverage a few years back and wondered why I ever stopped going.

Speedway is often covered very well on TV. But you don't get the smell of methanol and burning cinders

In my youth I used to follow my local team, Wimbledon. Barry Briggs used to ride there with Ronnie Moore. But they eventually had to close down.

And then, when I went to Swindon last year, who should be the guest of honour? None other than Briggo himself. Still looking good and still very much involved in speedway

I only had the camera on my phone with me and that's a bit shakey (it moves when you press the button which is a bit stiff). But I took a picture of the great man

They also gave us the pits tour, as "honoured guests, although not the guests of honour"

Another time I was there the visitors were Poole Pirates so I had the pleasure of meeting Jason Crump and seeing him ride. He's a bit good - but the Robins still managed to just win that night.

Thanks for the pic - you're so right about the smell (and the noise)!

It was seeing Jason Crump break through on TV that got me interested again.

Peterborough's my nearest now, it's a bit of a schlep but maybe I think I'll have to try & get over there a few times next season.
