Obscure garage band punk from the '60s and just about anything else from the '60s, early U2 too, LOVE The La's, '80s stuff like Stone Roses, Charlatans, Ride, Inspiral Carpets. Quite like Green Day at the moment.

Marky B,

What a range! We have a lot of similarities. Yes, Nat King Cole had a great voice, etc...

We ought to have a mix soundtrack for the Website from favourite movies, like a digital Internet radio station.

In the seventies,we used to get floppy 45's posted through our doors, advertising box albums. It was through one particular floppy disc I was introduced to Nat "King" Cole with the opening words of "When I Fall In Love",and I was instantly smitten with his voice. I also love his version of "Stardust",which cuts you through to the bone .
I also like musicals, especially Rodgers and Hammerstein, but my favourite is West Side Story and my favourite British musical is Lionel Bart's Oliver.
Also add to my list Natasha Bedingfield - someone who is not poaching of their sibling's fame, but who is also talented and gorgeous.

Great vocal renditions by Cole. I agree, I think his are the best. Stardust by the way was written by Hoosier Hoagy Carmichael and the place he wrote it is in Bloomington. Recently, his son and others did a tribute to him there.

Rodgers and Hammerstein had some good melodies. And, I always liked Consider Yourself One of Us from Oliver, came out when I started school.

This week I have mainly been listening to The HMV Collection Of Football Anthems.
Speaking of Rodgers and Hammerstein...You'll Never Walk Alone (Gerry and the Pacemakers style).

I prefer the PAT METHENY version,(prolific jazz guitarist) played on solo baritone acoustic guitar, his arrangement is just incredible! takes a simple tune, then turns it inside out re-harmonises the melody, revoices the chords,it's stageringly(is that a word?) harmonically complex, and incredibly beautifull,at the same time,a life time of study required to achieve these thing's most muso's mentioned on this whole thread need not apply!!

Cheers Ollie zzzzzzzzz.......zzzzz.... bored with the popular song format.

Proud to say that Nat King Cole shares my birthday.
It only takes one word to express his singing talent - "Unforgetable"

(There's) Always Something by Sandi Shaw

Of course, Blake's Jerusalem.

Thanks Gibbie,

How about "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting" by Elton John - great anthem for a team like Millwall.

Dave.

Those were the days . . . sung by Mary Hopkins with lyrics by Paul McCartney . . . . Manchester United

But back to music for England, let's not forget Ken Russells film on Elgar and also Vaughan Williams Fantasia on Greensleeves.

A memory of a bygone age would for me be Ron Goodwin's theme music from the Margaret Rutherford films of Miss Marple. A country cottage and Mr. Stringer on his trike. Lovely
