Found this cutting taken from the Times some Saturdays ago. A great, great song

STORY OF THE SONG
THE BOXER
Simon & Garfunkel (1969)
It took five months, 100 hours of studio time, a lift shaft and a church. "The Boxer" is an extraordinary acoustic achievement for the time. The tale of defiance and survival, about a boy who fights his way from poverty with his fists, tumbles out in a flourishing cadence, played by the country session guitarist Fred Carter Jr, and unfolds into a slow-build wall of sound.
Paul Simon began the lyrics on a plane, after opening a Bible and finding the phrase "workman's wages". Unhappy with increasing criticism, Simon was in
belligerent mood: "The song was about me," he said. "Everybody's beating me up, and I'm telling you now, I'm going to go away if you don't stop." When the usually non-composing Art Garfunkel heard a melody line in his head and suggested using it, Simon was so impressed he ditched a whole verse ("I am older than I once was/ And younger than I'll be") to make way for the middle-eight. Garfunkel's gliding solo was first recorded in Nashville, with Pete Drake on pedal-steel, and then cut again in New York on a piccolo trumpet, the two instruments blended in the studio by Roy Halee. For the chorus, Halee
was chasing a specific percussion sound. The drummer, Hal Blaine, took his kit to the CBS building on 7th Avenue (a street named in the song) and set it up by a lift. When the tape rolled and Simon & Garfunkel sang "lie-la-lie", Blaine came down on his snare as hard as he could. "Right next to this open elevator shaft it sounded exactly like a cannon shot!" he recalled.
As Christmas neared, Simon and Garfunkel visited a church, a location for a TV special. Knocked out by the ambience, the duo decided to record the vocal harmony overdubs there, and the song was complete.
Robert Webb</span>

The ditched verse they talk about is on the live double album of them at Central Park.
Thanks,Freddie about the insight of one of my favourite S&G songs - I love the orchestral ending.
Bridge Over Troubled Water is one of my all time favourite songs,an uplifting anthem for when times are low,a beacon of comfort,a throb of hope.
The Only Living Boy in New York is another great track from the BOTW album,perhaps a song foretelling the tragic events of that September morning in 2001,when life was drained from everyone in New York city. However,Bridge Over Troubled Water maybe provided the antithesis of that turbulent day.

Hi Marky B.

Apparantley the last verse of BOTW . . . sail on silver girl . . . . was added later when he was asked to extend it. Also watching The Graduate a few weeks ago it struck me how the music captured that period beautifully, but at the same time apart from the title song, each was so individual.
As for Only Living Boy In New York wasn't that about Art going to film Catch 22 or Carnel Knowledge. There was a book out in the 70's by Spencer Leigh called NOW AND THEN about Paul Simon. I bought it and got it signed when he played at Manchester. Then I lent it to someone and never got it back.

regards

Freddy

Thanks for that,Freddy. I just can't imagine BOTW without the last verse. As for OLBINY (Olbiny,Albany,capital of New York state!),I didn't know what it was about. I suppose at the time it might have related to the Vietnam war - a la Leaving On A Jet Plane). Nonetheless,I think it is a great song and only entered the UK charts via Everything But The Girl (number 42 in 1993).

Things where you have to join always makes me hesitant so I can't advise on the songfacts web site. I notice now to read some comments on IMDb you have to supply your email. Also the same with some film fan sites . . yahoo being one.
I don't want to be cookied or spammed although I have the software to prevent that. :spam:
Maybe I'm being a bit of a scaredy cat, I keep meaning to join but in the words of Tweedledee "normally I'm very brave but today I happen to have a headache"

Freddy.

ps. how about a cartoon film on the lives of our emoticons. If Sir Alec was alive he could reprieve his roll as Smilie and take on all the characters ala Kind Hearts.

pps what does BTW mean?

"What I owe you Colonel Lawrence, is beyond evaluation."

It's one of many TLAs that are used

What's a TLA?
A Three Letter Acronym - even though they're not all 3 letters :)

They are in common use in email messages, bulletin boards etc.

* AFAIK - As Far As I Know
* FWIW - For What It's Worth
* OT - Off/On Topic (as applicable)
* BTW - By The Way
* OBTW - Oh, By The Way
* FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions (usually with answers, like this is)
* FYI - For Your Information
* IMHO - In My Humble Opinion (very rarely humble)
* IMVHO - In My Very Humble Opinion (even less likely to be humble)
* ISTR - I Seem To Recall
* LOL - Lots Of Laughs
* ROFL - Rolls On Floor Laughing
* SWMBO - the wife/girlfriend (She Who Must Be Obeyed)
* IYSWIM - If You See What I Mean
* DINTAFLTT? - Do I Need To Apologise For Lowering The Tone
* DINTAFP? - Do I Need To Apologise For Pedantry
* ICBM - I Could Be Mistaken
* ICBM - Inter-Continental Ballistic missile :)
* WOEDTAM? - What On Earth Does This Acronym Mean?

There are lots and lots of lists of these things. See, for instance:

* RE-DIRECTING TO CURRENT PAGE...
* etc. etc.

But if you use the more obscure ones don't expect everyone to know what you're talking about.

The general rule is - "If in doubt, ASK" (as you did).
