A while back, I had a PM from a forum member asking about what music I like.
Sincere apologies to that member, as the PM appears to have been lost. So how about a music thread? Right now, I'm listeneing to Muse's 'Origin of Symmetry' I like a wide range of music from The Kinks in the 60's, the Stranglers and other punk stuff, via New Wave of The Vapors and XTC through to current music like Bloc Party, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Futureheads, The Zutons and Interpol, plus a million others I've forgotten right now. Anyone else? Oh yeah, and I HATE football!!!!! |

Hate Muse, utterly pointless, a Lidl version of Radiohead.
XTC were great, Bloc Party overrated (and I'm a fan), Futureheads best tracks are covers (they do a mean live cover of Television's Picture of Dorian Gray as well as Kate Bush), BRMC are a JAMC tribute band and Interpol are getting samey. 'Appen to like The Verve, old U2, The Smiths, Manics, Pavement, SFA, Talk Talk, Pixies, old Oasis, Blur, Beatles, Led Zep, Doves and Springsteen. Of the recent stuff, Arcade Fire, Ambulance LTD, James Blunt, Arctic Monkeys, KOL, Special Needs, Subways and loads of other stuff. And football is new religion. |

Radiohead used to be OK; Pablo Honey good; The Bends very good; since then they have exponentially disappeared further and further up their own arses. But they sound nothing like Muse.......or vise versa.... Similarly BRMC and JAMC, both sound very different. BRMC more innovative; especially with basslines; their basslines remind me of The Stranglers in many ways...... Futureheads best tracks are definately not covers.......as close to perfect as you can get................ The Smiths; well, it was more about the lyrics than the music, which was enough to send anyone to sleep, and the lyrics enough to make you want to kill yourself; and Morrissey too. 80's janglepop at its worst. The Manics used to be brilliant, until about 1992. Their early stuff was, at the time, a breath of fresh air. For ages I kept a 1990 article from my local rag of how they were going to be the new Sex Pistols...... 'New Art Riot', 'Teenage 20/20', 'Motown Junk', 'You Love Us' (original version), 'Democracy Coma', 'RP McMurphy', etc. Then stadium rock beckoned and the end was nigh......presumably Richey got out while the going was still good..... The Verve, early stuff rather than later............................. And does anyone **still** listen to Talk Talk ?!?!?!?!?! Early Oasis was good, 'Shakermaker', 'Supersonic', trouble is they think they're the Beatles. But they will never better Definately Maybe. You still can't beat yer Punk. Stranglers, (early) Jam, Buzzcocks, Clash, Damned, Pistols, Siouxsie and the Banshees, etc. |

Punk! The 90s kids listened to Rave, etc. Now they almost all listen to Urban centric music. Showing your age you know - late baby boomers! Me too.
To be stream of conscience from the last thread, I just got in and was listening to Away From the Numbers by the Jam from a digital download compilation. I like a few of Weller's songs. More recently, Leafy Mysteries. Although, not a fan of punk (there is no spitting smilie, thank Heaven!). To keep this Brit, here in America, a few of the Brit's I have recently listened to are Matt Monro (Autumn Leaves), Martin Simpson (Polly on the Shore), Nick Drake (Pink Moon), The Moody Blues (Lovely to See You), BJK & Dakotas (Humdinger), The Kinks (Waterloo Sunset), Julian Lennon (Day After Day), I like the piano and instumental in Coldplay's Clocks, and Delirious (Grace Like a River). Two good classical recordings from UK are Vaughan Williams/Elgar pieces by London Chamber Orchestra on Virgin Ultraviolet and Academy of St. Martin's ... Parkening Plays Vivaldi on EMI. My Sunday vespers recording is a nice hymn compilation by London. In Spring/Summer, like melodic music, anthemic classical and light jazz. We're having samba weather right now - 80-90s F. My cat likes Mantovani's Golden Hits and smooth music, along with the theme to Top Cat! :cat: Gibbie |

I was waiting for another film on FilmFour recently and caught a stunning short film on there which used "Ed Is Dead" as the play out music over the last few scenes & the final titles. The short film was The Call (2002). That link lets you play in online (it's only about 12 mins) A young man is visiting relations in North London. But they aren't in and on his way back he hears a mobile phone ringing under a hedge so he picks it up and answers it. After the initial surprise, the woman at the other end of the phone seems very nice and appears to be intent on seducing him. But this is a short story with a violent twist in the tale. Starring Louise Lombard & Joel Trill Directed by Theo Delaney Written by John McNally Steve |

To get some proximity with the above crowd, growing up I liked The Beatles and early U2 (DB7) and Interpol's untitled is a great instrumental (otherwise not my tea) (MOEW). I love football, but it is not my religion. Saw England v. US game.
I won't give further opinion. |

I've liked his work ever since I head Five Leaves Left on a sampler album in the late sixties / early seventies. There's a good documentary about him. A Skin Too Few: The Days of Nick Drake (2000) and he did manage to record 3 albums in his too short life. Did you know he was the brother of actress Gabrielle Drake? Steve |

One track that always hits a nerve is Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt. Combined with a bleak yet affecting video that combines footage of the frail old Man in Black (think he died months later) and archive material from his his rebellious youth it's magestically poignant.

I love my music and am always interested to know what other's are listening to. Love everything from 60's to Punk, Motown, Soul, Garage ect... but hate Country & Western, Hip-Hop and opera. Currently listening to The Eels, The Dears, Kaiser Chief's, Arcade Fires,British Sea Power, Hot Hot Heat, Interpol, Doves, Bloc Party, New Order, The Killers and many others. Most impressed with Van Morrison's latest "Magic Time" album especially with the title track.(Great to hear the mouthorgan again !!) Other current fave track - "Sharkfin Blues" - The Drones. A regular music thread on this site would be excellent Dave. |
