And for having had such a visible presence online for so long.

But I do have very good email filtering and anti-virus software so I don't mind my address being as public as it is. I'm prepared for any spam or fraudulent emails.

I'm a complete ludite as far as IT goes, so could you recommend a good e mail filtering & anti virus software package. I have Norton is that any good? It seems to me to be but what do I know?

Norton's good, but throw away anything with that logo on it.
Outlook doesn't give you enough control over your emails. Internet Exploder is about the worst browser available. Also, the spammers and hackers know all their weaknesses and target them.

Try Firefox as a browser and Thunderbird as a mail client.

I have been unhappy with IE & Outlook Express for a long while now, after reading your post I took the plunge and installed Firefox & Thunderbird.I was up and running within 5 minutes ,totally painless.
Now If I could just get the courage to change my OS to open source.

Norton does gobble up resources.

When your subscription runs out, I'd suggest looking at avast! for anti-virus and Zone Alarm as a firewall - both are free.

There are also a number of spamkiller programs that you can incorporate into Thunderbird. I use Mailwasher Pro in conjunction with Turnpike [an email client originally written for Demon subscribers] and no spam or other nasties get through here. That is now a commercial version but I'm sure the original free version is around somewhere on the net - I'll hunt it out if you're interested.

One thing about disguising your email address: you must not disguise it in such a way tha you may unintentionally use what could be a real address, however silly the address may be. That is almost always liable to get your account closed.

Well done for that changeover. You'll see that Thunderbird learns to recognize spam if you mark the first few as spam. You can also use the Tools -> Message Filters to either direct spam straight into the Trash or into a Spam folder where you can check it before binning it. That check just needs a quick scan of the subject & sender to see if messages from anyone you recognise got in there by mistake. You can also use those Message Filters to direct other email to other folders or to make sure that messages from friends don't get taken to be spam no matter what they contain.

And aren't the tabs in Firefox easy to use? You can now have as many browser windows open as you want - all in the one window.

Change over to linux and you'll find that suddenly your computer is 5-10 times faster.
You can also do some real multi-tasking and have it do two or more things at once :)

I run a dual boot system so that I can boot it up into either Windoze or linux.

I'd never heard of that happening. I suppose the best way is to add the ".nospam" at the end, rather than at the beginning of the hostname after the '@' sign. Maybe things like

That way, none of those will have the email sent to the email host.

If you want to display an address publicly you can just create a new account you won't shed any tears about if it gets spammed to death.

You should be able to do it with a normal network card. I use a Telewest (soon to be merged with NTL) cable connection and the cable modem just plugs in to the network card. There was no special setup needed and certainly no extra drivers needed.
