He got an OBE in 1993. Time for an upgrade.

What did Sir Mark Thatcher or Sir Anthony Blunt get recognised for?
Or was the damning evidence against them just Sir Cumstantial?
Mark Thatcher is no knight - he inherited the title from his father who was created a baronet in 1990. Blame John Major for resurrecting that herditary title as a one-off. Harold Wilson put a stop to it in the mid-1960s.

Traitor he may have been but Anthony Blunt earned his knighthood as a top art expert. When he was publicly exposed he was stripped of his honour.

Albert Finney deserves one but I think he had the good sense to decline. Vive La Revolution and Freedom for Tooting!

Yes - the leaked 'Sunday Times' list of refusers included Finney who rejected a CBE and a Knighthood athough I did read that he joined his mate Sir Tom Courtenay for a celebratory meal after his visit to the palace.

IMHO the whole idea of honours should be junked.
Since Major opened the system up to the public,we now have fans and acolytes lobbying for honours for their favourites, not to mention people like Caine and Jagger demanding them. Then there's Connery, who accepts an honour from a monarch and nation that he campaigns against.
Those who want honours shouldn't get them, and those who deserve them shouldn't accept them.Save them for acts of bravery and unstinting public service - thats if we must have them at all.
What ever system is chosen, the self-serving will hijack it,you can be sure.

Jacky

PS. It would be nice if all recipients deigned to live in the country which honoured them.

It is academic now,but who would you like to see get honoured in the New Year honours?
Richard Briers (knighthood)
I would say that Richard Briars is one of the best actors we've ever had. He's consistently excellent in both straight and comedy roles, live stage productions and on TV. They are currently re-running the radio version of Brothers-in-Law from the early 1970s on BBC7's Listen Again and it's thoroughly enjoyable. His performance as the nasty and manipulative Sir Clixsby Bream in the Inspector Morse episode "Death Is Now My Neighbour" was excellent.

He's 71 now as well, so if a knighthood is suitable recognition for services to the theatre and televison then he thoroughly deserves it!

Well he was an OBE and he recentlly became a CBE so the only way up is a knighthood.

Well,no Sir John Barry and I agree with most comments that Brucie deserved a knighthood, after all he is arguably the longest running entertainer on British television.
